PLEASE HELP THE WARREN FAMILY MOVE TO SAFE HOUSING

This appeal is on behalf of a Maynard, MA family – mom and 3 boys – who have been living in unsafe, dilapidated housing for over a year and a half. Superficial repairs have not addressed the ongoing problems. Local officials are getting involved now, but the family needs funds to get out of this situation and into a safe, clean place ASAP.
Unreliable heating in winter; holes and gaps in the ceilings and walls; pests; window screens broken or missing so it’s not safe to open windows; broken floors repaired with vinyl tiles that peel off; a faulty fridge and jury-rigged dryer hookup are some of the problems with the current apartment. It is hard to overstate the psychological effect of living in these dismal conditions. On top of that, asthma puts two of the children at greater risk in such an environment. The family is desperate to move.
This mom works part-time and supports her family with rent assistance. It hasn’t been possible for her to save any money for moving. The goal is to fund the initial rent payment of first, last, and security, totaling around $8000; plus $2000 to pay for the move itself and related expenses. Friends have already donated around $500 directly, so the remaining need is $9500 to make this move happen, as soon as a new home can be secured.
If you live in our town you may be aware that a GoFundMe appeal was started for this family recently but then was closed after just a couple of days – and about $4,000 in donations returned to the donors. The tenant now has an attorney assisting with the legal aspects (pro bono), so we are trying again. In view of the strong community support for the first appeal, the goal seems quite reasonable to reach.
The person we want to help is not only a loving and responsible mother, but also an advocate for other tenants who are experiencing the same conditions. She continues to think of others as she struggles to improve conditions for her own family. She can be an even stronger advocate when her living situation is safe and secure.
