My name is Mike Kappers, I've been a wrestling coach, friend/brother to the Sabrowsky family for years. Del and Kari always help others and never ask for anything in return. Please help them in their time of need. Here is their situation:
Saturday, February 11th just before 3 pm our communities felt a devastating loss of a young man during an automobile accident. Their vehicle was traveling northbound on Hwy 65 just into Polk County on what's known as rollercoaster road. Alex and Ryan were backseat passengers. Ryan was seated behind the driver and Alex was seated in the middle. Although they were both wearing their seatbelts the vehicle they were riding in was traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle caught air and lost control when cresting the hill and crashed into two vehicles that were traveling southbound on Hwy 65 causing their vehicle to roll several times. Passerby's pulled the backseat passenger on the seated on the passenger side from the vehicle and began CPR. That young man was pronounced dead at the scene. Ryan was the only person to gain consciousness and pull himself from the rolled vehicle. Passerby cut Alex from his safety belt and they began working on him until EMS arrived. Alex and the front-seat passenger were in critical condition and both were airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. The driver and Ryan Sabrowsky were transported by ambulance to the Amery Hospital, and later transported by ambulance to Regions Hospital as well.
Ryan Sabrowsky suffered a broken arm, and fractures to his back and pelvis. From the trauma from the crash, there was an air gap between his lungs and chest lining. Imaging showed that he did not have any punctures in his esophagus and was able to begin to eat and drink last night. No surgeries are needed at this time. They will reevaluate in a few weeks. Ryan is moving around pretty slowly but overall should eventually make a full recovery.
Alex has not been so lucky. Regions performed several surgeries on Saturday immediately after his arrival. Internal injuries of bilateral lung contusions, bilateral pneumothoraces, lacerated liver, lacerated kidney, lacerated spleen, ruptured bladder, damage to his large intestine that required sutures, adrenal gland infarct, shattered pelvis that required internal plates and screws and external hardware to try to hold everything in place. Alex is in critical but stable condition. He is on a ventilator, feeding tube, tons of meds, and chest tubes to drain the blood from the internal bleeding. His color is looking better and they are attempting to lower the amount of oxygen from the machine to make him start to breathe more on his own. Although things are looking better, he is far from being out of the woods and at the very minimum a very long road to recovery.
The Sabrowskys' are tough kids and they are fighters. Their family helps everyone and never asks for anything. These are difficult times and the family will have a lot of financial hardships due to the injuries the boys have suffered. The loss of time at work, fuel money, parking costs, meds, and all the things that add up to a lot over time. Please help support the Sabrowsky family during their time of need. They were passengers in a vehicle, wearing their seatbelts, and no alcohol was involved. An unfortunate situation where a young driver made some poor choices that caused hardships for the Sabrowskys' and other families. Please help them in their time of need. Send prayers to all the families involved and to the bystander that attempted CPR and helped extract the remaining passengers, EMS, and law enforcement personnel for being professionals in this unfortunate tragic situation.
