Hi, my name is Monique and I'm fundraising for my mom, Sylvia Walls.

Many of you have been following my moms’ medical issues since October 2022.  All the issues identified, while concerning, were nothing compared to the devastating news we received last week. It was confirmed that my mom was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, Grade 4, the most advanced aggressive and incurable form of this type of cancer.

Unfortunately, this is the second time my parents have had to grapple with cancer.  My father was diagnosed with skin and anal cancer in 2014, having recently retired and not yet eligible for post-retiree insurance, they exhausted all their savings to ensure he beat cancer – and he did.

My parents luckily have insurance and a supplemental plan, but those plans will not cover all of the items my mother will need. Most notably, they don’t cover home health care, more than 1x per week. While my mother is doing well now, there will come a time where we will need more hands-on, experienced medical care as my dad, now 69, is not fully equipped to handle this.

Glioblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumors, accounting for 49.1% of all primary malignant brain tumors and approximately 10,000 individuals in the US will succumb to this cancer annually. The five-year survival rate for adults is 6.8%, with the mean survival rate being 15 months. While our hope is longevity, our goal is quality of life, for both my mom and dad.

My parents have always helped others’ out. Built houses and decks for people, volunteered to stay at the hospital with loved one’s children so the parents could get rest, stayed with elderly family members, babysat, the list goes on. This fight is not just for her, but for my dad and Elliot and Oliver, and selfishly me. Knowing there are funds to help them would be a relief for me as well and would allow me a bit of breathing room in future planning.

Funds raised will go to help with medical bills and treatment expenses including gas to/from daily radiation, related medications that may not be covered by insurance and the supplemental, and home health care as well as any other instances that may arise and need to be covered. Any amount is greatly appreciated.
