Update:

Wanda was care flighted to Methodist Richardson for more specialized care. Watching her go through all of this has been so hard, but we are holding on to faith and hope every single day.

Respiratory therapy is working to slowly wean her off the AIRVO — it’s a high-level oxygen support that helps her breathe easier. She’s was on 40 liters this morning and on 60 liters right now. The surgeon and ICU nurse practitioner came by and said her chest X-ray showed some improvement from yesterday, but unfortunately tonight is worse.

Cardiology shared that her heart cath showed no blockages (thank God for that ) still pending stabilization and clearance for open heart surgery due to deterioration of her Mitral valve. Speech therapy has also been working with her. She did great with her swallow test but will need continued therapy for memory and to help her adjust to her vision loss. She has right-sided hemianopsia, which means she can’t see on her right side unless something is directly in front of her or slightly to her left.

This has been such a long, emotional, and overwhelming journey — physically, mentally, and financially. We are doing everything we can to stay strong for her, but we truly need help. Wanda has been courageously fighting an acute illness since October 6th, when she started experiencing extreme flank pain and Upper Respiratory symptoms. What began as a hopeful recovery has quickly turned into a frightening battle for her life. After visiting three different hospitals, she was finally admitted to the ICU on Saturday, October 18th dx with Streptococcus pneumoniae- a bacterium that can cause serious infections like pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections.

Wanda has been running a persistent fever between 101–104°F for more than ten days. Despite multiple rounds of antibiotics and IV hydration, her fever continues today, now at 101.9°F. She recently had a PICC line placed and is undergoing an ECHO with a bubble study. Doctors have also discovered a small left frontal stroke and pulmonary edema, and she’s now being tested for meningitis as they search for answers.

This unexpected health crisis has caused Wanda to miss over a week of work, and the mounting medical bills are becoming overwhelming. I’m setting up this GoFundMe on behalf of the Sledge family to help ease the financial burden during this incredibly difficult time.
