With the heaviest heart,
Blaire and Dakotta lost their perfect little boy, Colter David Schumm on September 22, 2024 due to complications after open heart surgery.
During pregnancy, Blaire and Dakotta had went to an ultrasound for their 20 week anatomy scan to find that there was believed to be an abnormality with baby Colters heart and referred to a specialist.
After multiple ultrasounds, fetal echos, testing, etc- baby Colter was diagnosed with Tetrology of Fallot, which is a heart condition that consists of four heart defects.
The plan was to see how Colter was doing after birth and determine a date for surgery otherwise.
After an extremely emotional and difficult labor for both parents- the most perfect baby boy, Colter, was born on May 13, 2024. The difficult and emotional journey would continue as the parents knew that due to Colters heart condition he would have to spend an unknown amount of time in the NICU and not at home with them. After a long 24 days in the NICU where Colter recieved excellent care, Colter was finally able to go home.
During the four months Colter spent at home surrounded by the best parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, great grandparents, friends -he hadn't shown any complications due to his heart condition, which made scheduling his open heart surgery difficult for Blaire and Dakotta even thought they knew the surgery was inevitable and had to be completed so complications didn't arise.
Blaire and Dakotta knew after the well worth difficulties of Colters birth that surgery wouldn't be easy, however they never envisioned this procedure being the reason that their sweet boy would not be returning home.
Colter went in for his open heart surgery on September 17th with the hopes and expectations that he would be going home within 5-7 days.
The next 5 days turned into a nightmare- it was found during surgery the Colters heart was worse than originally thought but surgery was able to be completed. Soon after, Colters lungs and kidneys started to show a decline, which gave suspicion for poor reperfusion even after the heart surgery to correct the original problems. Colter then had to have another procedure in hopes that his heart would start perfusing the way it should- but it didn't. After being placed on ecmo, dialysis, and plasma exchange- on top of being treated with multiple other medications to sustain Colters life, surrounded by family- Blaire and Dakotta were told the words that no parent should ever have to hear, being that there was nothing further that could be done for Colter.
In the early afternoon of September 22, Blaire and Dakotta lost their baby boy.
If being surrounded and loved by family and friends was all that this family needed to help them through this devastating time- they wouldn't need anything, however expenses for medical bills, funeral services, day to day basics, etc. add up quickly and neither Blaire or Dakotta should have to be rushed back into a "normal" routine when they are experiencing the worst moments of their life.
There truely isn't a "goal" to reach, however any donation will be going directly to the family to help them in their time of need.
Thank you for helping this family in need, your generosity will not go unnoticed
