Pat Finn is a great human. He is a wonderful brother, son, friend, all around terrific person. He would do anything for the people around him and would give them the shirt off his back if needed.
Following is what has happened in Julie's words.
Tuesday April 15th Pat went to Mama's Pizza on Saddle Creek. He fell in the parking lot and hit his head causing a smallish brain bleed on the right side of his brain. He was in the hospital for 1 week and was released. Later that same day he was at home. My brother Bill was there; but in the kitchen when he thinks Pat fell again in the hallway. (Update: the doctor thinks it's entirely possible that his brain started to bleed again, causing the fall.) There was a hole in the wall from where his head probably hit. He wasn't responsive so Bill called 911. He was taken back to the hospital but this time he had a large brain bleed on the left side of his brain. The surgeon told us he needed surgery to remove the left side of his skull in order to give him a chance to survive. Obviously, we ok'd this.
They kept him sedated until Friday afternoon. After that he was just getting pain meds as needed. He was still fairly unresponsive for several days. I know on Monday when Kevin and I went to visit. He was starting to move his left hand enough that they had to restrain him a bit so he didn't pull his tubes out. Also, he was kind of opening his eyes. The nurse told us he was mostly breathing on his own that day. (He's been incubated this whole time btw).
When we went to visit on Wednesday, he was moving a little more and starting to open his eyes even more but still not able to follow commands. Yesterday most of my family minus me went there in the afternoon to have a meeting. While everyone was there and after my mom said a prayer over him, he really opened his eyes big. My brother Steve held his hand and had him squeeze it. He did twice really hard too!. A nurse came in and asked him hold up 2 fingers and he did- twice! He is becoming very coherent and alert.
Since I started writing this post my brother Steve called and told me they are taking the ventilator out. This is a big deal. This means he's breathing on his own and they won't need to do a tracheotomy. That is what I know for now. I'm going to run and see him again today. I'll make updates as I get them.
Thank you for all of the thoughts, prayers and well wishes
Update:
He lasted 30 minutes without the breathing tube. Best way to put is there was too much mucous that he would've technically drown in it. He will probably get a trech soon. It's just a hiccup. We still have a lot to be positive about.
Update:
The tracheostomy was done so he is off the vent. He has been on antibiotics to fight off a couple of infections and he has had to have a new drain put in. He seems to have good days and rougher days; however, the nurses say he is doing really good and the only reason he is on that floor is because of the brain tube.
Please continue to pray for Pat.
