Our dear friend Steve Huibers has been dealt a terrible hand for the last year. As a single father of 5 children, Steve has always put his kids first. If you don’t find Steve on a basketball court coaching young impressionable youth in our community, he’s likely chauffeuring his sons back and forth to their own football and basketball practices/games, or driving his daughters to University. Steve is a very proud father. The last 12 months have been unfathomable for him financially. Starting with multiple house emergencies, followed by a union strike that lasted for 3 months with no pay, and ending with being forced to put his house on the market but unsuccessfully selling it, adding more financial burden on Steve’s shoulders.

However, nothing could have prepared him for his cancer diagnosis, just days before Christmas 2023 and just months after losing his beloved mom. Steve’s entire world came crashing down in a hurry, but being the man Steve is, he put on a brave face for his children to keep the Christmas magic alive. Steve’s stage 2 cancer has now spread to his lymph nodes, pelvis and abs, requiring 4 rounds of chemotherapy. The absolute last thing he needs to worry about right now is the financial burden the chemotherapy will add to Steve’s stress.
