In early June, my husband Kenny discovered he had cancer. It originated on his tongue and was present in one lymph node. He was very ill after his first round of chemo and ended up hospitalized for 4 days. He still has many months to go.

Without a second steady income source, the medical debt is overwhelming. Just one of his drugs costs $600 a month. I've gotten bills totaling about $14,000, and he is not even 2 months into it.

Asking for help is embarrassing. So much shame is associated with debt. Our medical debt has depleted our savings. But we've just hit a wall as everything we own needs to be replaced. Our 25-year-old Jeep is on its last legs. Our 60+ year-old house has leaks. We had a chimney fire, and the fireplace has been unusable. We relied on it to supplement our heat. Our riding mower died, and the push mower died too. Our lawn could be hiding The Shadow and The Darkness lions, and we'd never know. Our heat pump also died, which is why we need the fireplace.
