Please Help Sandra in her fight Against Cancer

Sandra, my mom, is without a doubt the most beautiful human being I know. She has dedicated her entire life to my sister and I from the moment we were born to this day. She is sweet, simple, loving and always willing to serve others. We can't imagine a life without her...

Today, I am writing to you because we urgently need your support to help her fight a totally unexpected and devastating diagnosis: Stage IV Lung Cancer (with metastases to the brain, kidneys, and lymph nodes). For us, her family, it has been very difficult to make the decision to publicly ask for help, but we are determined to try absolutely everything in our power to fight for her life.

Less than a year ago and for no apparent reason, my mother (only 50 years old) began to feel extremely weak, with general malaise and various pains, reaching the point that it was impossible for her to get out of bed. Her life came to a standstill. After many medical exams, tests, painful interventions and multiple admissions to different hospitals, we received the diagnosis of advanced lung cancer this March. Initially the prognosis was overwhelming and totally hopeless. Even so, it was decided to administer chemotherapy and radiotherapy with the aim of trying to extend her lifetime. Despite the terrible side effects of several rounds of these treatments, my mom has been an example of strength, maintaining an admirable fighting spirit guided by her relentless desire to continue to live and be a part of our lives.

Two weeks ago, we received molecular pathology results showing that my mom’s cancer is classified as: Non-Small Cell Cancer, ALK+. This means that the cells in her tumors have a mutation in the ALK gene that makes them very aggressive and capable of invading different organs. This type of mutation is present in only 5% of patients with lung cancer. However, this diagnosis has opened a great possibility of effective treatment to extend my mom’s time and quality of life, since there is a "targeted therapy" that is having excellent results worldwide in patients with this type of cancer. This medicine has given us back the hope of winning the battle for my mother's life.

Unfortunately, this medicine, ALECTINIB, is extremely expensive and out of reach for us as a family. In the best-case scenario, this treatment in Peru costs $6,000 a month and she will need to take it for the rest of her life.

As you can imagine, my mom's treatments and the constant care she requires have put our family in quite a difficult situation. All of us are doing our best to get this medicine for her (which is not covered by insurance), but we know that it is going to be untenable to do this alone. Our goal for now is to raise enough funds to cover a year of treatment while we investigate different long-term options. That is why we ask you from the bottom of our hearts and with all due respect to support us in order to access this expensive treatment, which is currently the only hope we have. ¡Ayudemos a Sandra en su lucha contra el cáncer!

Sandra, mi mamá, es sin duda el ser humano más bello que conozco. Ella ha dedicado su vida completa a mi hermana y a mi desde el momento en el que nacimos hasta el día de hoy. Es dulce, sencilla, amorosa y siempre dispuesta a servir a los demás. No nos podemos imaginar una vida sin ella…

Hoy les escribo porque necesitamos con urgencia su apoyo para ayudarla a pelear contra un diagnóstico totalmente inesperado y devastador: Cáncer de Pulmón en Estadio IV (con metástasis en cerebro, riñón y nódulos linfáticos). Para nosotros, su familia, ha sido muy difícil tomar la decisión de pedir ayuda públicamente y por esta vía, pero estamos decididos a intentar absolutamente todo lo que está en nuestras manos para luchar por su vida.

Hace menos de un año y sin razón aparente, mi mamá (de tan solamente 50 años) se empezó a sentir extremadamente débil, con malestar general y diversos dolores, llegando al punto que le era imposible levantarse de la cama. Su vida se paralizó. Después de muchos exámenes médicos, análisis, dolorosas intervenciones y múltiples admisiones en diferentes hospitales, recibimos el diagnóstico de cáncer de pulmón avanzado este marzo. Inicialmente el pronóstico era abrumador y totalmente desesperanzador. Aun así, se decidió administrarle quimioterapia y radioterapia con el objetivo de intentar extender su tiempo de vida. A pesar de los terribles efectos secundarios de varias rondas de estos tratamientos, mi mamá ha sido un ejemplo de fortaleza, manteniendo un espíritu de lucha admirable guiado por su implacable deseo de seguir viviendo y ser parte de nuestras vidas.

Hace dos semanas, recibimos resultados de patología molecular que muestran que el cáncer de mi mamá se clasifica como: Cáncer de Células No-Pequeñas, ALK+. Esto significa que las células en sus tumores presentan una mutación en el gen ALK que las hacen muy agresivas y capaces de invadir diferentes órganos. Este tipo de mutación esta presente solamente en un 5 % de los pacientes con cáncer de pulmón. Sin embargo, este diagnóstico nos ha abierto una gran posibilidad de tratamiento efectivo para alargar el tiempo y calidad de vida de mi mama ya que existe un medicamento de “terapia dirigida” que tiene excelentes resultados a nivel mundial en pacientes con este tipo de cáncer. Este medicamento nos ha devuelto la esperanza de lograr ganar la batalla por la vida de mi mamá.

Desafortunadamente, esta medicina, ALECTINIB, es extremadamente cara y está fuera de nuestro alcance como familia. En el mejor de los casos, el tratamiento en el Perú cuesta 6,000 dólares al mes y lo tiene que tomar por el resto de su vida.

Como se imaginarán, los tratamientos de mi mamá y el cuidado constante que ella requiere han puesto a nuestra familia en una situación bastante difícil. Aun así, todos nosotros estamos haciendo los mayores esfuerzos para costear esta medicina (que no está cubierta por el seguro), pero sabemos que va a ser insostenible hacerlo solos. Nuestro objetivo por ahora es conseguir fondos para cubrir un año de tratamiento mientras investigamos diferentes opciones a largo plazo. Es por eso, que les pedimos de corazón y con todo respeto que nos apoyen con el fin de acceder a este costoso tratamiento que es por el momento la única esperanza que tenemos.
