Dear friend,
If you've met my brother, Robert Henderson, you know how funny, smart and kind he is. My brother Robert, has Colon Cancer, with spots on his liver and his lungs. Having been through Hurricane Katrina, losing everything, losing my Dad, I thought we had gone through the worst things that could happen to someone. I was wrong.
September 17 was Robert’s third surgery, on his colon, at Slidell Memorial Hospital in Slidell. He is in terrible pain and is unable to even get out of a chair without assistance.
Anyone who has met my brother can tell how much Robert cares for his sisters, his friends, and his two little dogs, and what a genuine person he is. He treats everyone like family; in the picture of the three of us, that is my Dad, me, and my brother Robert. Its an older picture, but that picture embodies home and family and safety, and Robert is the big reason why.
So I write this letter to you, to ask that you please consider donating anything you can to a medical fund to help my brother, Robert, pay for his surgeries, medication, and expenses while he is home, hopefully recovering, and staying around for his sisters.
Our Dad died when I was still in school. My brother stepped in, and did all the ‘Dad things’ that girls need, like convincing me I was beautiful when I got my heart broken, teaching me to drive standard transmission so I could drive my beloved used Nissan to school, coming to my school events, and letting me live with him when I had nowhere else to go. Robert was the one who made the call to me when my Dad died suddenly, and was the first one I called when my teenage son suddenly died at 15. Robert is the best big brother, ever.
Robert completed an appointment to see a surgeon on 09/5/2019, to make a further treatment plan and for schedule surgery, again, this time removing more of his colon. Surgery will likely follow with chemotherapy and radiation. He has been told he could be home for months, and unable to work for that time. He has a long and difficult road ahead, and still he spends his time trying to cheer me up about his health.
Working in a field that is helpful to others is unfortunately not high paying. Robert still works as much as possible, even after surgery. He will have limited income, if any, for quite a while, and like many of us after Hurricane Katrina, he used his savings and even retirement to rebuild his life. Robert is at the start of his fight, and there is an initial 6000.00 due as part of his upcoming surgery, out of pocket, and that’s to start with. Like so many people fighting cancer, Robert is panicked about his mortgage, groceries, things that you should not have to worry about while you are sick – and to anyone reading this, fighting illness, I will include you in my prayers. You shouldn’t have to worry about feeding yourself or keeping a roof over your head when you are already fighting for your life.
My goal in setting up this account is to try to support Robert, show him that people care and want him to focus on getting well, and not the huge financial burden that comes with fighting cancer. I have gone back and forth to Louisiana from Texas to assist my brother in transportation, caring for his home and animals, cleaning his house, grocery shopping, anything I can do to help him. Those expenses add up, too.
There will be more trips to and from appointments, medical fees, etc, and it will be exceptionally difficult considering that, at best, he has been told he will be unable to work for months. I'm hoping that with all of our support we can eliminate some of Robert’s fears about losing his house and being unable to pay for medical care, which is why I am creating this Go Fund Me account. I have tried to be reasonable in setting the goal, and if anyone needs any kind of verification as to Robert’s situation, please reach out.
If all you can do is donate 10 dollars today, and share this with your friends on social media, its very much appreciated. Prayers are awesome, too.
I want to thank you all, many of whom I may never meet, for being in Robert’s corner. I hope one day soon I can update you all with good news. Robert took a lot of convincing to let me write this letter to you all, because it’s so personal, and he never asks for anything. I thank you for reading it. Please donate any amount that you feel is affordable; even 10 dollars is so appreciated.
Please help Robert fight the good fight with as few additional worries as are possible. (I’ve cried through writing this whole letter, and for you ladies out there, yes, it’s the ugly cry.)
Thank you all for caring about my brother, Robert Henderson. Please also share this on Facebook if you can.
peace and love,
Peyton
