Please help restore the Jack Sue Building Midland

Jack Sue (1925 - 2009) was often referred to as one of Australia's most loved sons. Jack was a covert commando agent in Australia's famous 'hush hush' Z Special Unit for more than 6 months behind Japanese Lines in British North Borneo in 1945. For his bravery, He was awarded Australia's 2nd highest military award; the 'Distinguished Conduct Medal'.

Post WW2, he became one of Australia's pioneers in the underwater world. He established Perth's first retail outlet and manufacturing divisions in underwater products. The 'Jack Sue Diving School' survived more than 40 years without a single injury or fatality. The Jack Sue Diving Tours was a popular attraction all over Australia where divers and other keen travellers, all clambered aboard for domestic and international diving as well as special interest tours.

After 38 years in the two city stores, Jack purchased No 6 Helena Street Midland in 1984. He quickly turned the old 2 storey Chinese restaurant into his 3rd diving store.

In 1997, Jack suffered a major stroke while undergoing a bypass operation which left him confined to a wheelchair for the remaining 12 years of his life until he passed away on 16 November 2009.

The building has become popularly admired as the 'Jack Sue Building'. Many locals who have grown up with this monumental icon, are extremely proud of Jack Sue and his building in Midland.

My name is Barry Sue and I am extremely proud of my father's life and achievements. I share many wonderful memories of the father and man, who was one of Australia's people persons, who gave so much to the community, throughout his full and very exciting life.

The Jack Sue Building was declared under the local heritage act in WA. The outside 4 walls of the place are all that is covered under this status. Everything inside has been altered since 1898 when the structure was built.

The building does not qualify for National and/or State heritage grants. As it is local heritage only, this status falls under the Shire Council authority and the City of Swan does not provide any financial assistance to places such as this.

I humbly request public help so that I can upgrade this wonderful old building that will be a perpetual trophy to the people of Midland for many generations to come.  As you can see from the video above, it needs considerable repairs to the facia, awning as well as rear stairs and more.

I am nearly 72. For obvious reasons, I request these funds as soon as possible. It would mean everything to me to have this building redressed into its former glory so that it will continue to shine for locals and visitors to Midland, long after I am gone.

For your generous support, I can only offer my sincere compliments and best wishes for my heartfelt thanks.

Yours sincerely

Barry Sue
