Paula Javela Sotelo DVM, a native Colombian in Madison, WI was the victim of a hit-and-run on Nov. 29. The drunk driver hit her, dragging her 30 feet, and leaving the grill of his car at the scene of the accident. She had multiple broken bones and internal injuries. On top of this, a homeless person robbed her of her wallet, passport, and phone. She was finally found, unconscious, by police and taken to the hospital. Paula sustained a fractured right calf, broken bones in her left thigh, left knee, pelvis and in two ribs. She also had a nasal fracture, spinal fracture and a fracture to a bone at the base of her spine. She also had a right kidney bruise and liver laceration. She has had 3 surgeries and doctors recommend further surgeries for her neck. She has been in the hospital for 2 weeks and her student insurance has been maxed out. The doctors expect her to be in the hospital at least another month, then she will need intense rehabilitation after that. She started physical therapy, which was helping her pain, but has no more money to continue. The drunk driver had no insurance and no job.
Paula is a brave, strong, Christian woman. She came to the US to study immunology. At age 45 she moved to a foreign country, not speaking English, and has immersed herself in the culture and made huge strides learning a new language. She loved the United States and hoped to stay here and contribute to scientific research. This horrible accident has shaken both her faith in God and in humankind.
As an American (Wisconsin) friend of Paula's, I’m trying to raise money for Paula to help with her physical therapy. Anything you can send for Paula would be greatly appreciated. I am in contact with Paula's brother, Mauricio, to have the funds raised wired to Paula's mother's bank account in Colombia, where she is currently staying. Thanks so much for your support!
