In 2020, Patrick began experiencing strange waves of muscle weakness, cramping, tremors, and swallowing difficulties. These continued to get progressively worse. He finally sought treatment in 2023 when the swallowing issues became untenable. He had to stop working in 2024, as even just 5 minutes of typing or speaking would cause the muscle groups involved to fail and lock up, requiring long periods of rest to recover. And certainly, walking more than a few minutes has become near impossible. Any relative amount of physical exertion is followed by days of severe skin inflammation. He was preliminarily diagnosed with Seronegative Myasthenia Gravis, but many more tests and procedures are still needed. There were some treatments that initially showed promise but quickly became ineffective and led to regression. He is now at a point that almost all his meals are liquid. More than a few bites of even soft solid food puts him at risk of choking.
