Austin Duer Unexpected Medical Expenses
Donation protected
Austin was involved in a terrible incident Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was shot in the right side of his face. He was brought to the hospital by ambulance, intubated and taken into emergency surgery to control bleeding, which was successful. After surgery and after having several scans he was found to have a shattered portion of his jaw bone, a fractured C1 vertebrae, a small fracture to the base of his skull and a severed right carotid artery. Amazingly, there was no injury to his brain or spinal cord. Sunday morning things were looking up but unfortunately complications arose. After multiple scans it was determined that he had developed a clot and ultimately had a stroke. He was taken into surgery to have a craniectomy which removed a large piece of his skull to allow for swelling of his brain. They were also able to do an open thrombectomy and managed to remove a large part of the clot and get a return of blood flow. When they turn down sedation he follows commands and squeezes our hand but he is in a lot of pain so for now they are trying to let him rest as much as they can.
