Please help our devastated Oaxacan community!
Donation protected
We are Miche, Marti, Mary and Allie and we humbly ask for your donations to help the community of El Vigía, Pochutla, Oaxaca, Mexico. On May 31, 2022, Agatha, a category 3 hurricane, slammed into this coastal, mountainside community. At least 11 souls lost their lives in the area; many are still missing. The winds, subsequent flooding and mudslides have left our dear friends without shelter, clean water, food or clothing.
For 15 years, we have been working with the people of El Vigía, contributing to various projects, including a computer room/library, electrical upgrades, and soccer field for the elementary school, solar electricity for the middle school, and composting toilets for families. In addition, we have supported the dreams of three young people, sending them through college to achieve degrees in business, culinary arts and nursing.
Over these years, we have developed close ties with several families, including that of Jesusita “Chuy” Santos. She raised eight children and several grandchildren working her Ocho Hermanos (Eight Siblings) taco stand. Unfortunately, the hurricane destroyed the family home, including the kitchen where she prepared each day’s offerings.
Our friends, Chuy, Petra, Verula and Karina and their families have immediate and long-term needs. Right away, they need clean water, food, cooking fuel, shelter, bedding and clothes. In the long term, they will need new homes, a reliable supply of clean water, and basic appliances, like refrigerators and cooking stoves.
Any donation, large or small, will help this community recover from this disaster. Thank you for taking the time to read our appeal.
