Many of you know Barbara Gustaveson. Her kids from school call her “Miss Gus” and by the time they are in Ninth grade they call her “Gus”. She hasn’t been able go back to teach her students. She misses them desperately. She loves being an art teacher and has helped thousands of students over 25 years.
With all the health and pain issues she has completely exhausted her resources and doesn’t have a way to pay for testing and for procedures and a physical rehab facility. She she has been bed ridden for months.
Some of the problems stem from Covid 19 which has prohibited her to get the necessary medical help. Right now she is unable to take care of herself and has had to self pay for skilled nursing and it has cost her $10,000 so far.
In July she ruptured another disc in her back which resulted in her 5th back fusion sugary which was done at the end of September. She was sent home with a small hole about the size of a pencil eraser. The surgeon had taken off the bandage and never had it rebandaged. She was sent home with a fever of 100 and infected fluid coming out of that hole. Four days later she was running a fever of 104 degrees which sent her to the ICU with sepsis.
After that she was sent to a physical rehab facility where she spent almost two months there. She has a cavity underneath that small hole that was measured by her wound care doctor. He said it was the size of a football and was dangerously close to her spinal column. The surgeon disagreed with the wound car doctor and took a wait in see attitude which made the problem worse. She wound up going home right before Thanksgiving. A week later she woke up with the worst sciatic pain. When she stood up it felt like someone had shot her in her back and she fell back on her bed and had to call for help.
At the beginning of January is when she found out, after a culture was done that there was a raging infection in the cavity. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital and spent a little over a week there. While she was there she was put on one of strongest IV antibiotics there is.she was on that for two months at a skilled nursing facility. She was able to go home even though the sciatic pain made it excruciatingly difficult. When she got home the pain worsened again and she went back to the hospital again.
She had used up all her skilled nursing days and still needed a help. She couldn’t get up at all and has been at another skilled nursing since the beginning of March. She needs help to pay the medical bills and to pay for physical rehab.
We will keep you updated on her progress. We love BARB so much and love that even though she’s been in so much pain for the last few years, she continues to serve others with her talents and bright attitude about life. We want to return some of this love and want her to be able to continue to get the care she needs!
thanks so much friend,
