Hi, I'm Stephany. I've known Nikki for 6 years. She is a friend, daughter, sister, mother and grandmother. She is one of the kindest souls you could ever meet! She is quiet literally a ray of sunshine! The world could be falling apart around us, and she is the type of person who can always see, feel and exude HOPE! Back in 2014, it was recommended that Nikki undergo a hysterectomy. Due to work (and a lack of healthcare) and the busyness of life, she had to wait. Unfortunately, once she did have the ability to have the surgery in July 2019, the doctor's discovered the reason for all of the issues she had been having. The culprit was Uterine Serous Carcinoma. Nikki then began her journey into chemotherapy. She started with 6 rounds every 3 weeks. At her next check-up in early 2020, they told her she was free and clear of all evidence of cancer. Fast forward to fall of 2021, when she began to notice she had some GI pain and fatigue. In December, 2021, her oncologist broke the news to her that she now had liver metastases. She is considered terminal but with technology and medicine advances each and every day coupled with her immensely strong faith, Nikki has hope. A faith and hope so strong, no thief and no cancer can take from her! Just before her diagnosis of Liver Mets, Nikki began working again helping people enroll in Medicare and also secure insurance coverage through the Marketplace. How ironic it would become that because she was so new to her job, not only would she not have and STD or LTD able to kick in to help cover the basics, while also not yet being eligible for FMLA, but also that one of the 2 medications she would need just to prolong her life just a little, in kind of what would be considered her last hope, would require a $20,000 out-of-pocket co-pay. Who in the world has $20k hanging out in savings as a result of living through economic unrest, political turmoil and a worldwide pandemic that had all but stopped life as we know it?
Strangers, friends, family...anyone out there who will listen...can you help Nikki? Can you think of her as your loved one? Can you think of her as your best friend? Can you think of her as some stranger who paid you a tremendous kindness that maybe you never got to repay? Can you donate $1, $2, $5, $10 or more? Can you share this as if this was your best friend? Your mother? Your sister? Your daughter? Your grandmother? Your aunt? Your co-worker? Can you be the steward of her story and encourage all of your loved ones to take care of their health? Can you pay it forward?
