Our son’s best friend was in a side by side accident earlier today(02/05). The hospital only allows one parent staying the night so there will be cost of back and forth travel to the out of town hospital.
Jessica had just put her two weeks in at her job last week and unfortunately has lost all benefits. Medical bills will pile up with the amount of surgeries he will be having and the amount of weeks he will be here for recovering.
***02/09 UPDATE***
Update on Nate He got the clear to eat regular food! He can only eat a few bites before he’s full, but we’re making progress! This morning he had his first round of Occupational and Physical Therapy. The therapist told me that he exceeded her expectations by a mile. In fact, she said he did so well that they are already beginning to do the work up preparing for his discharge plans (in a few weeks). He will have to have a wheelchair at home (which means I’ll need a ramp and a recliner) bc he cannot put any weight on his legs for roughly 12 weeks until his pelvic bone has completely healed. He will have to have his pelvic fixator (the metal bar across his hips), his colostomy bag, and supra catheter (that’s in his bladder) will also stay for at least that long as well. He said he can’t wait to learn how to do wheelies on his wheelchair (not happening)! His images are coming back looking great and showing tremendous healing progress from within. He did have a fever last night of 102, but they said they are monitoring him and checking levels to rule out infection. They said that fever is to be expected being that he was open during surgery for so long. He is still in ICU for the meantime until they can rule out the fever is caused from infection. His spirits are up for the most part. He said he LOVES PT and he feels great after (that’s the athlete in him she said). He hasn’t been able to open his cards yet. When the pain meds wear off he becomes agitated and uncomfortable in the bed (for obvious reasons). Still takes periodic naps throughout the day. I’ll try again tomorrow to see if he’s up to open some, but he saw his posters and the amount of cards and said mom! That’s a LOT! Can I open them later? He said to tell everyone he said thank you and he will open them when he has some more energy. He has us all scratching and rubbing his arms, legs and head non stop when we’re in the room. He asked OC yesterday, and Tyson today to rub his feet. And of course they did! Thank you so much for your continued help financially, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He looks so much better and is healing better every single day! ❤️
***02/06 EVENING UPDATE***
PRAISE THE LORD! AFTER 6.5 HOURS, HE IS OUT OF SURGERY AND THE SURGEONS ARE CONFIDENT HE WILL FULLY RECOVER!!!! Thank you all for your prayers! It worked! They just came back and said that they accomplished everything they went in to do with ZERO complications or hiccups! They said he is one tough ass kid. Never gave them an issue. Never cried, showed resistance, listened to everything they told him (when he was awake) the entire time he has been here! That’s my boy!!! ❤️❤️❤️ They said that his pelvic bone has been properly adjusted and is exactly where it needs to be now, and that “all the parts were still there (thank GOD), they just had to put it all back together - which they did. The bladder, reattaching and reconstructing the urethra, and reconstructining the colon- ALL OF IT! Mission accomplished as far as surgery goes! As long as he doesn’t get an infection, they won’t need to go back in. And they said if he does, they have easy access to go right back in and fix it again. He’s loaded with antibiotics to help prevent risk of infection. They will monitor him for the next few weeks. He has 2 tubes inserted to release any fluids and waste that will need to drain out from the healing of surgery. His trach tube will come out tomorrow and he will be a lot more comfortable, and most likely get moved out of ICU to the floor just in time for his birthday on Wednesday It’s far from over, but my baby is on the mend! God willing he will not get an infection and he can heal the way they think his body will. They said they are confident that he will heal due his young age and good health. We cannot thank you all enough for your love, support, calls, texts, donations, prayers, and good vibes. It truly means the world to us! His dad and I get to see him tonight but they said he won’t remember any of today due to the anesthesia. I don’t care I’m going to see him and kiss him anyway GOD IS SO GOOD ❤️❤️
***02/06 AFTERNOON UPDATE***
Nate just went into surgery here at Tampa General. They said it will be at least a 4 hour surgery to do: 1. Tweak the previous procedure of putting rods in his pelvic bone into a better position (the pediatric surgeon wasn’t 100% satisfied with the placement from Lee trauma center - could have shifted via transportation also). 2. Then going in to try to reconstruct his bladder, attempt to reattach his urethra to his bladder, and reconstruct his colon. 3. The bottom of his pelvic bone was forced down and broke the skin through his right scrotum area and has made a very large laceration in that whole area. It is still seeping blood from that as of today. They are going to try to stop the bleeding there and suture that wound from the inside out during this procedure also. The goal is to get as many surgeries done as possible in a timely manner so that he can begin to heal from the inside and get his tube removed, etc. The longer they wait, the longer he prolongs recovery. I hope this all makes sense I’m on about 6 hours of sleep in 48 hours. It’s the best I can do at the moment. I’m going to try to sleep while he’s in surgery before I can go see him Thank you all who have contributed and offered help. It is greatly appreciated. You have no idea how grateful we are
02/05 EVENING UPDATE
In simpler words and terminology, tonight they did the first surgery to basically align his pelvis bone back to where it needs to be. Turtle and i got to go see him at around 12:30. He is intubated and sedated so he is in no pain. He opened his eyes when we spoke and immediately started crying. Broke my heart. We reassured him that it was going to be ok, and we are here for him, and to trust what the doctors tell him to do so that he can heal. They gave him a blood transfusion to replenish the blood he lost from his pelvic bone, and he is in STABLE condition! He is currently in the air being transported from Lee trauma center to Tampa General so that the Pediatric unit can restore his bladder, urethra, and colon that have been ruptured. He will not be able to stand on his own for at least 4-6 weeks they said. Knowing Nate, he was using his hands to say he wanted to talk to us. Dr said no buddy you can’t talk bc the tube needs to stay in. So he motioned for me to come hold his hand. He spelled out letter by letter on the palm of my hand: I’m sorry Am I going to die I saw Jesus And Colby Am I staying in this room Is the bike ok Are they ok (meaning his friends) I have mucous when I cough (so they removed it at that time which was very rough to watch bc he cried) Tell them I love them (when I said your brothers and whole family are here) We answered all his questions, and the nurses were pretty impressed at his ability to communicate (he is his momma’s son ). Thank you all for your outpouring love and support. Life can change in the blink of an eye. Hug your loved ones. It’s going to be a long road of recovery ahead of us. Please pray for my baby. Headed up to Tampa in the morning.
02/05 AFTERNOON
Nate was in a side by side accident. He was not driving. He was with 3 friends. The bike flipped on top of Nate. He was on his stomach and it landed on his lower back. No other kids were injured. When I got to the scene he was responsive when I asked him if he could hear me and if he was okay. He was med flown to Lee Health to the trauma center. We’re here and he was responsive when he came in. Answered all her questions upon arrival. Fast forward: he has shattered his entire pelvic floor. Bladder, colon, urethra, and pelvis will all have to be reconstructed. Has a hematoma from his scrotum to his anus. He is internally bleeding and he is currently in interventional radiology to stop it. He bled A LOT. Dr said he may have to have help learning how to walk again (we’ll know more later). He will be here for a weeks they said.
**Since moms post they have stopped the bleeding and he is currently in surgery to reconstruct his pelvis. It will be a minimum of 4 hours. He will also continue to be intubated and sedated until Wednesday (02/08) due to them needing him not to move.**
I will continue to update as much as possible. Anything is helpful at this time and thank you again.
