Nathalie has been overwhelmed, not just by medical appointments, but also by your kind texts, phone calls, and emails. Please be aware, that Nat doesn't have enough hours in the day to respond to all the questions that compassionate friends have asked of her. Nathalie will personally try to update everyone on the FB page that Caro created for her called: "Team Nat". Nathalie recovered from her first chemo on March 5th. Although she had some nausea, she was not sick to her stomach thanks to medication. Due to some other precautions that Nathalie took, she did NOT get mouth sores nor "growing pains" (common side effects) from the chemo & injections. Nat's next chemo will be on March 23rd.....she is expecting to lose her hair after that.

Dear Family & Friends,
To our shock and disbelief, Nathalie was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on January 28th 2021. It is tough enough, both physically and emotionally, to fight against cancer, while trying to act “as normal as possible” around your 7 yr. old child. But having an extra, heavy financial burden on top of that is unbearable! Thank goodness our health care covers basic cancer treatment. But, Nathalie was ordered by her doctor to stop working; thus she has NO income. Although she will apply for the 15-week government sick leave pay, unfortunately this “beat the cancer” journey will likely last more than 9 months. Furthermore, as a private environmental contractor, Nathalie does NOT have long term disability, nor any kind of “extended health” care plan that covers prescriptions and other services.
Beyond prescription drugs, there are many “over the counter” meds that Nat will need for nausea, anti-reflux, anxiety, for constipation, etc. Plus there will be vitamins, pain meds and other supplements. All of these add up to thousands of dollars! Let me list a few more expenses: A wig made of natural hair costs around $1.3K. If for some reason, I can’t drive Nat to her appointments, a Canadian Cancer Foundation volunteer driver will charge Nathalie $37 to go to St. Jerome, and double that to get to Montreal! And Nat often has 3 appointments per week! When I do drive Nathalie, there is the cost of gas and parking. Furthermore, there are additional things that add up quickly: ice pack for hands and ice socks -- both to avoid neuropathy; dry mouth rinse & spray to prevent cavities and mouth sores, a heating blanket, sleep spray, etc, etc.
Yes, Alain, Nat’s husband, works long and hard in his toy shop; but his income can’t suddenly double or triple to make up for the loss of Nat’s salary, and to pay for all the extra expenses that cancer treatment involves.
So we are asking for help from all of our friends and family.

C’est avec effroi et incrédulité que nous avons appris, à la fin janvier, que Nathalie était atteinte d’un cancer du sein triple négatif. C’est déjà un très grand défi, autant physique que psychologique de combattre un cancer sans compter l’importante pression financière que ça apporte. Comme vous pouvez vous en douter, le médecin a demandé à Nathalie de cesser de travailler durant ses traitements, réduisant de beaucoup ses revenus.
Nathalie bénéficiera de l’assurance emploie pour raison médicale mais ça ne couvre que 55% du salaire pour une période de 15 semaines. Les traitements dureront au moins 9 mois. De plus, comme Nathalie travaille à contrat et qu’Alain son mari est entrepreneurs, ils n’ont pas de bénéfices comme l’assurance médicament et invalidité longue durée. Une chance que notre système de santé couvre les coûts de base d’un traitement contre le cancer et une assurance provinciale couvre une partie des coûts de médicaments mais ce ne sont qu’une partie des coûts médicaux.
Laissez-moi vous parler de quelques autres dépenses; une perruque fait de vrais cheveux coutera environ 1 300$. Il y aura plusieurs médicaments pour la nausée, le reflux gastrique, l’anxiété, la constipation, la diarrhée sans compter les vitamines et suppléments. Il y a des items spécialisés comme des bas et gants réfrigérés pour éviter la perte des ongles, le rince-bouche et pulvérisateur pour éviter l’assèchement de la bouche, les infections et les caries, de la gelée pour le nez, etc…
Il y a ensuite les coûts de l’essence et le stationnement, et si moi ou Alain ne pouvons reconduire Nathalie à un rendez-vous médical, il en coûtera 37$ pour se rendre à Saint-Jérôme et le double pour se rendre à Montréal avec un bénévole de la fondation canadienne du cancer (parfois Nathalie a 3 ou 4 rendez-vous par semaine). En tout et partout, on atteint rapidement des milliers de dollars de dépenses.
Bien sûr, Alain, continue de travailler au magasin mais il devrait doubler voire tripler ses revenus pour compenser les pertes de salaire de Nathalie et l’augmentation des coûts pour lutter contre le cancer.
Voilà pourquoi je fais appel à vous qui aimez Nathalie, Alain et Léa pour les aider, comme vous le pouvez, à traverser cette épreuve. Vous pourrez contribuer au Go Fund Me que j’ai ouvert pour eux.
