My big sister Megan (36 years old) has no idea I’m creating a go fund me page. For those of you who know our family, you know that Megan has been dealt an awful hand - medically. Also, she would never in a million years ask for help. So I will for her.
Megan has had multiple back surgeries, knee surgery, rib, jaw...the list goes on and on. She has worked her whole life tirelessly doing what she loves to do, but her body finally took a toll on her and in July of this year, she had to have a knee replacement. We were hopeful that this would be the final surgery to fix all her problems! Sadly, this wasn’t the case.
On July 11th, Megan had a knee replacement. Ever since recovery, she’s been unable to urinate naturally. We were told this is normal after being put under general anesthesia and that her “bladder would wake up in just a few days.” It did not. Therefore, a catheter was needed temporarily, but after 6 weeks, there was still no relief.
On Aug 26, Megan had bladder surgery to install a tube connected from inside her bladder that comes out below her belly button. She now urinates through that tube into a bag. We were told this is the next step, as you cannot keep a catheter in for longer than six weeks due to infections.
On October 1st, Megan started to experience a level of pain I wish upon no one. She was rushed to the ER that day. These are debilitating spasms that occur every 5-10 min.
Today, October 26th is day 26th day in 2 different hospitals. She was first seen at UCLA for the first 19 days, then transported to Cedars last Wednesday. After UCLA was “stumped” about what to do with her case, they released her without any diagnosis.
The doctors still don’t know the root cause of her issue. Right now, she’s in the hospital to manage the spasm pains. Once the spasm pain is under control, they believe this will (hopefully) allow her bladder to decrease inflammation. So far, 25 days later, nothing is working. The hope is that the doctors can run internal tests along with exploratory surgery once the swelling goes down.
The following medical Plan is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, October 27. An invasive procedure to paralyze her bladder for 3-6 months. (Possibly 12) Hopefully, this will stop the pain, but it is not guaranteed.
If this works, then testing can finally begin.
Megan's disability stopped, and we need help with rent, health insurance and minor bills for the next few months. The cost of 25 plus days (and counting) in the hospital is an overwhelming number that we choose not to think about right now, but what I am asking as her sister is for our community to come together to help Megan in this time that she is unable to work. We have no idea how long she will remain in the hospital; we have no idea the cause of her issues; we want her out of pain to start.
Megan is the hardest worker I know, and it’s been heartbreaking seeing her in such pain and without answers. If we can alleviate even the slightest worry, such as these bills coming up for the next several months, I know it would help.
Those of you who know Megan know she has the kindest soul, most generous heart, worked so hard her whole life and loved every bit of what she did.
Could you help me help her by spreading the word?
All donations go straight to Megan to help pay her immediate bills, such as health insurance and rent. The rest of the money will be put aside to help her pay all outstanding medical bills.
Thank you all for reading and helping her during this tragic time.
With a heavy heart,
Alex (little sister)
