Please Help My Mom Recover

Donation protected
My name is Edward. My mother, Karen, had a stroke - an hemorrhagic, thalamic stroke - that left her alive but changed.

My mom was a Radio Announcer and Producer at WRR Classical 101. She has three college degrees in music and always loved classical music. Her stroke happened on Labor Day. Over Labor Day weekend she had been on the air from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and almost that long on Sunday. Sunday evening she sang the “Star Spangled Banner” with the Dallas Wind Symphony to begin WRR's Picnic In The Park at the Dallas Arboretum. There were lots of hands to shake and pictures to be taken. Karen was very tired – she had a difficult time remembering names – and we headed home together. The next morning was Labor Day. She got up, did a few chores and laid back down for a short rest before waking me to go out to breakfast and then she would head to work. A short time elapsed when Karen felt an odd shift within her eyes. She opened her eyes and was unable to see clearly; she felt she was unable to move. She tried to call for me but realized that her mouth wouldn't form the words. I heard her, ran into my mother's bedroom, was shocked by her condition, and called 911. That was the beginning of a stroke.

My mother's life has never recovered. My mom had an hemorrhagic, thalamic stroke due to taking birth control pills. Today her entire right side is still paralyzed. Her brain bled for 15 weeks. Her left eye turned all images upside down. She has double vision and must wear prism glasses. The right side of her face is lower than the left and lacks muscular strength. Despite being paralyzed she has managed to learn to walk again with use of a cane and a painful leg brace. On her right hand she wears a custom-made brace that stretches out her paralyzed fingers in hopes of some day finding mobility again. Through sheer determination in her in-patient and out-patient therapy, she no longer uses a wheelchair and walks with a cane. She finally is able to speak clearly. She is not able to use her right arm and hand for more than a few subtle movements. She has moved from an assisted living facility to an apartment. Money is sparse and she is facing eviction. She is divorced, an only child and both her parents are deceased. She has applied for 200 jobs but gotten nothing. Her future is uncertain.

Statistically 96% to 97% of people who have this type of stroke do not live. I am very lucky my mom is alive. Three times, Karen has applied for social security/disability benefits and has been denied. She currently has no medical insurance. She is in need of various medical treatments and money will need to be raised so that she is able to obtain treatment. Because of her double vision, she needs special glasses ($1,200) and therapy for her eyesight ($8,500). Hyberbaric oxygen therapy for stroke patients increases oxygen in the brain and helps to heal damaged brain tissue ($6,500). Neuro-Integrative Functional Rehabilitation And Habilitation (Neuro-IFRAH) is an highly effective therapy designed for stroke patients. It restores the patient to the fullest physical, mental, social and vocational status. ($10,000 plus travel expenses to California and $250 per hour for local rehabilitation). It is through these therapies that Karen has the opportunity to develop herself intellectually and physically.

Please help me help my Mother get back on her feet. She deserves it. She is a kind, considerate person and deserves good things. She deserves to get a second chance at a new career and a happy life. She is about to be evicted from her apartment and can't afford the basics in life like laundry soap and toilet paper. She has worn the same pair of shoes every day for the past three years. Please, please help her with money to live and money for therapy. My mother deserves to know regardless of how differently-abled she is, she deserves the same chances as everyone else.
