Hi, my name is Diana and I am the oldest of four siblings. I am from Honduras in Central America and have lived in Canada since November 2021 with my husband and my three children. Since the start of 2022 my mother, Maria Elena, has been fighting lung cancer. She is 68 years old and has been undergoing several treatments in Honduras since then. Before lung cancer she was on remission for ten years after surviving colon cancer in 2010.

The past four months have been really difficult because several things have happened that have affected her well being. She was diagnosed with an abnormality in her heart that causes sudden arrhythmia episodes. For this she needs a surgery that can not be done in Honduras. She is also facing an adverse side effect of one of her cancer treatments that has provoked her right lung, where the tumor is, to be swollen and affect her ability to breathe on her own. This treatment has been completely suspended. The tumor has grown and her oncologist has stated the tumor has become more aggressive. Because of where the tumor is located, it can not be surgically removed.

Sadly, the public health system in Honduras is unreliable, slow and inefficient, so we are forced to move to private care which is very expensive. She has been hospitalized for three weeks now due to the swelling in her lung and waiting for steroids to work and allow her to breathe without an oxygen mask. She will then need to start chemotherapy again to keep on fighting the tumor and when her condition becomes better, the heart surgery will need to be programmed.

After telling her medical story, I want to tell you she is a relentless, strong, loving and caring woman. She has dealt with health issues since she was a little girl and has overcome them with faith, support from her family and medical treatment that has thankfully done the job. Right now, we are in over our heads and are appealing to your good will and empathy hoping you can contribute in the path to help my family with all these medical expenses.

Hola, mi nombre es Diana y soy la mayor de cuatro hermanos. Soy de Honduras en Centroamérica y vivo en Canadá desde noviembre de 2021 con mi esposo y mis tres hijos. Desde principios de 2022, mi madre, Maria Elena, ha estado luchando contra el cáncer de pulmón. Tiene 68 años y desde entonces se ha sometido a varios tratamientos. Antes del cáncer de pulmón, estuvo en remisión durante diez años después de sobrevivir a un cáncer de colon en 2010. 

Los últimos cuatro meses han sido muy difíciles porque han pasado varias cosas que han afectado su bienestar. Le diagnosticaron una anomalía en el corazón que causa episodios repentinos de arritmia. Para ello necesita una cirugía que no se puede hacer en Honduras. También se enfrenta a un efecto adverso de uno de sus tratamientos contra el cáncer que ha provocado que su pulmón derecho, donde se encuentra el tumor, se hinche y afecte su capacidad para respirar por sí misma. Este tratamiento se ha suspendido por completo. El tumor ha crecido y su oncólogo ha declarado que el tumor se ha vuelto más agresivo Debido al lugar donde se coloca el tumor, no se puede extirpar quirúrgicamente. 

Lamentablemente, el sistema de salud pública en Honduras es poco confiable, lento e ineficiente, por lo que nos vemos obligados a pasar a la atención privada, que es muy costosa. Ha estado hospitalizada durante tres semanas debido a la inflamación del pulmón y a la espera de que los antibióticos y los esteroides actúen y le permitan respirar sin una máscara de oxígeno. Luego tendrá que comenzar la quimioterapia nuevamente para seguir luchando contra el tumor y cuando su condición mejore, será necesario programar la cirugía cardíaca. 

Después de contar su historia médica, quiero contarles que es una mujer implacable, fuerte, amorosa y cariñosa. Ha lidiado con problemas de salud desde que era una niña y los ha superado con fe, el apoyo de su familia y el tratamiento médico que, afortunadamente, ha hecho el trabajo. En este momento, estamos desbordados y apelamos a su buena voluntad y empatía con la esperanza de que puedan contribuir en el camino para ayudar a mi familia con todos estos gastos médicos.
