My name is Tom Feddor, on January 18th, 2023, my husband Christian Olson was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. This is a very cruel disease in that there is no cure and without a lung transplant my husband will slowly suffocate and die. After spending 32 years together this news was beyond devastating. We initially met and started dating on March 11th, 1991. I knew right away that I had found the love of my life, my soulmate, and my best friend. While I strive to remain hopeful, I cry often as my emotions come in waves. I had expected that someday we’d retire somewhere warm and spend our golden years together. The realization that this may not happen tears me up inside. I feel like I’m driving a car through a crowded city at 100mph with no control. I keep asking myself, “how do people do this?”
While the disease is terminal and he has already lost 80% of his lung function, there is still hope. The drug OFEV works to slow down the progression of the disease. Starting the prescription would give us more time together and time to be evaluated for the lung transplant list. Unfortunately, our insurance company denied our application for the drug. At a monthly cost of over six thousand dollars, the prescription is crazy expensive. We were all set to get the prescription filled by a special pharmacy, we were waiting on approval from the insurance company. The appeal process takes at least 45 days, a time that we, unfortunately, do not have. The only hope right now for my husband’s survival is to get him on the prescription of OFEV as we wait to see if he qualifies to be on the list for a lung transplant.
As if things weren’t bad enough. During the early morning hours on February 15th, 2023, I had a bad seizure. Luckily, Christian found me on the bathroom floor and called 911. While on the way to the emergency room, I had a huge asthma attack and woke up two days later hooked up to a ventilator. After spending the week at The University of Illinois Hospital they sent me home to recover. I am super thankful to The Chicago Fire Department EMTs
and The University of Illinois Hospital for everything that they did to save my life.
The purpose of this page is to collect donations to secure the OFEV prescription for Christian, to offset some of the many medical bills that are piling up, and to assist with everyday expenses. I know that money is difficult to come by today, but please know that anything is helpful and very much appreciated. If you cannot donate perhaps you can help by passing this page along to a friend. Thank you for your time. God Bless.
