Can you help even in the smallest way?
My beautiful friend and her lovely child are being made homeless from a domestic violence refuge in 2 weeks time.
They have exhausted all options in fighting this, minus a legal challenge which would be costly, time consuming and utterly draining on a traumatised and exhausted mum. So the funds are for two things - to provide a suitable short term let, and to help fund a preloved static caravan so they have some stability and peace while she can contemplate her next (long term) move.
They have been in a number of refuge accommodation for 3 years now after having to flee their home from domestic violence. They have been 2 years with the same council and have been on the waiting list for housing in that time. They are still not close to getting a council or HA home due to the excessive demand in the area.
They have been offered a room in a hostel, with shared facilities which is wholly unsuitable due to disabilities and health issues that they both have, this has been backed up by occupational therapists and paediatric consultants. Social services have also admitted this is not suitable but there is nothing else they will provide for them.
They have also been told they cannot bring her son’s cat. For a traumatised autistic child this just isn’t an option my friend can contemplate.
Private landlords will not even consider her due to one or all of needing possible future adaptations for disabilities, a pet, housing benefit. She also needs a very long term landlord due to these health issues and they both just need some stability and somewhere they can lay down roots.
I would be so grateful if you could help, it breaks my heart everyday to see this happening to them and not being able to do anything meaningful about it. I know once they have been able to heal from this awful period in their lives that my friend will give back in so many ways. She has a lot of insight into the way we as a country treat our most vulnerable.
