One of my dearest and best friends has been diagnosed with Mucodermal Carcinoma in her mouth. Many of you know Ashley Bridges (Hudgins) as a beautiful, brilliant, and hilarious 38 year old single mother to her daughter Ava who is 5 years old. Ashley and I met when we began working together in June of 2015 and have been great friends since that time. One thing that I’ve learned about Ashley throughout the past five years is that she is both strong and courageous- and that she would do anything to help anyone. Ashley and Ava quickly became family to me and my two daughters.
Last Tuesday, September 22nd, I learned of her diagnosis with her in the oral surgeon’s office. The pathology report results from a biopsy explained that she had Mucodermal Carcinoma. He explained then that it was malignant, cancerous and that surgery would be necessary. The tumor that had begun growing silently years ago in her salivary gland would now affect her face and mouth. The tumor is not treatable with chemotherapy nor radiation which meant that it had to be removed entirely, leaving Ashley forced to have her palate, part of her left jawbone and five teeth removed and replaced with a prosthetic. Although Ashley has health insurance which will cover the majority of the cost, the prosthetics doctor is not covered by insurance and she will be required to pay $5100 up front. We were able to get Ashley the required money so that the doctors could begin scheduling surgery as soon as possible, now planned for October 15th. Unfortunately, on top of those costs, she will also incur the expense of an out-of-pocket maximum amount of 20%. Ashley has been working hard to support herself and her little girl in all of the time that I’ve had the pleasure of her friendship. Please give anything that you can to help us support her now in her time of greatest need and help us to reach our goal of $5000.
