Last April, my family was struck with something that would change our lives forever. Out of the blue, one day, my brother was fine then not, and it happened fast. He came home from work like a normal day, then could not get up out of bed and was slurring his speech, amongst other unexplainable symptoms. My sister-in-law was able to get him to the ER, where they started running tests and found a large mass in his brain. They started him on medication to help the swelling in his brain, then moved up to Redwood City to the neuroscience unit. They ran more tests and found it was a large tumor in the front left side affecting his motor skills. They did emergency surgery the next day and removed all but 1%. When they did the biopsy on the tumor, they found it was already stage four cancer. His journey has been multiple rounds of radiation and other treatments. Since this terrible day, they have found a new tumor on the back of his brain that is now starting to grow slowly. His latest MRI has shown a lot of fluid, allowing the cancer to spread throughout his entire brain. My brother has been unable to return to work, and his benefits from work have run out. He will never be able to return to work, and we do not know how much longer we have with him. Since the cancer has spread, his memory is going fast, and he is constantly lost and confused. We are working on getting him on permanent disability, and Kaiser Medi-Cal since that is where his doctors are that he has been working with. My sister-in-law is trying her best to work and keep things going, but things have been hard, having two young children to care for as well. I have never done one of these, but we need some help with medical expenses and whatever we need to do to help get their family through these times.
