Hello, my name is Michael Newman I am 27 years old and I live on Hayling island. Up until now have worked self-employed as an Air conditioning engineer for the last 8 years usually working up in London. I have always been very active, and I love training It’s my passion it’s what I live for. I enjoy running, Mixed Martial arts, Archery, Calisthenics, Swimming, Badminton, Motocross and riding motorbikes and working out in the gym. On June the 30th I was out with my friends enjoying a day out riding on  motocross track in Oxford it had been a very good days riding the day was nearing an end and then unexpected happened as I went round the corner I hit a rock and clenched the handle bars of the bike the accelerator throttle got stuck wide open and sent me flying off the side of the track, I traveled a great distance in the air and landed flat on my back I sustained a L3 burst fracture in my back, broken tail bone and pelvis instantly I knew I was in trouble as I couldn’t move or feel my legs at all I then had to be air lifted to the nearest hospital that being John Radcliff’s hospital. I had a 6-hour surgery in which the consultant removed numerous shards of bone from the spinal column. When I eventually came to from the anesthetic I was then delivered the news that I was paralyzed and that I would never walk again I was absolute devastated by the news it took a long time for this to sink and to accept the fact that I could spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. I see this next chapter of my life as a challenge and I am going to meet it head on and I’m not taking no as an answer and I fully intend to walk again with or without crutches. Since my accident I have spent time at Southampton and then ended up in the Salisbury spinal rehab centre where I have spent every minute of every day working either by myself or with the physios with whatever muscles are responding trying to strengthen them and give me the best fighting chance of achieving my dream of being able to walk again. During my stay my ability and dedication has been noticed by the staff here and I have been given the opportunity to represent and compete in the spinal games which is a 4 day tournament for wheelchair sports for the hospital and I am very excited about the prospect of being able to compete again. This journey has tested my faith in myself and my ability to overcome the prospect of consumed by paralyses and instead rising up and digging deep and continuing to push on in the right direction I have made great progress over the last 4 months and now discharge from the hospital and the physios and facilities here is imminent. I have learned only this week that post discharge there is a wait for physiotherapy of at least 11 weeks this would mean all of my progress to date would be undone as I have no means of maintaining the hard earned muscle gain I have worked so hard to get. Not only that I have been told I will not be supplied the essential equipment required for my recovery. This is a list of equipment services I will need to aid my recovery: A standing frame (this is an aid that allows you to put weight through your feet strengthening them and allowing pressure relief to avoid pressure sores) £850 Pressure relief cushion (pressure mapped) for the wheelchair £500 Spinal mattress £500 Specialist bed £1000 Recumbent bike £600  Physiotherapy that will be on going £75 - £100 per hour twice a week and transport to and from. I find myself facing both physical and financial challenges due to the accident the physical ones can be tackled with hard work and determination if I have the means to do so where as the financial ones pose more of a problem as I am unable to work and what little savings I had have been used for essential house adaptions that will allow me to return home. This is a situation I never thought would happen to me and i am never going to give up hope of walking again i would really appreciate any help. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
