Please Help Mercy's Medical Expenses

Our mom, Mercy (Mercedes) is 87 years old and is currently battling Covid-19 infection in the Philippines. On May 5, 2021, she told my brother that she wanted to get checked by a doctor because she feels weak and hard of breathing. When she was taken to the hospital, her oxygen saturation level was 86% and her x-ray showed that her lungs were cloudy especially the right one. The attending physician informed us that her right lung was full of phlegm. Our mom was then tested for COVID using the RT-PCR testing which returned a POSITIVE result. According to the doctor’s medical assessment, our mom has been carrying the infection for about two weeks already. She was then taken to the ICU and put on a ventilator. Because of her age, the doctors wanted to do aggressive treatment. They recommended for our mom to have a series of hemoperfusion sessions – where blood is taken out of the body and filtered for toxins and impurities – and in addition to that, she has had blood and platelet transfusions, a variety of antibiotics, steroids, antibacterial medications, and a whole lot more.
It has now been 17 days of her in the ICU. My brother was able to see her yesterday, and said her arms are covered with bruises (caused by low platelet count), and that she has been ‘tied’ to the bed since she would gather her strength and attempt to remove the tubes from her face. She looks like a Halloween Christmas tree. It pains us to see her this way. Recently, our mom had undergone tracheostomy to assist in her breathing.
If you have met our mom, you would understand that her asking for a doctor is like a blaring fire alarm level 3. She has never wanted to see a doctor or attend routine check-ups as she has moved into to her more senior years.
Our mom never leaves the house for fear of getting the virus. Unfortunately, it was taken home to her by family members. We implore everyone to practice all COVID guidelines. These precautions are there for a reason. Please protect yourself and your loved ones before it is too late.
Our mom’s medical expenses have reached over $25,000 (₱1,175,000.00) and continues to grow each day. Due to Medicare not covering her hospital bills, and us being unsure when she will be able to leave the hospital, we are imploring for your help. We are hoping to raise $50,000 to help cover our mom’s hospital stay and future medical expenses. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Lani, Jojo and Iyay Umali and Zai Maquiling
