In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I would like you to meet my awesome sister-in-law, Melissa. She's also an amazing sister, daughter, cousin, auntie, and friend. She's generous, thoughtful, caring, and hilarious. This past spring, she began the fight of her life when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite the emotional rollercoaster that cancer brings, she's maintained her sense of humor and has been incredibly brave throughout her journey. However, even with health insurance, the financial obligations are hitting her very hard. If you saw her out-of-pocket costs, you'd spit out your morning coffee.

No one should ever have to make medical decisions dependent on their health coverage. There should be no out-of-pocket expenses. For what we pay for health insurance, we should be well cared for; no treatment and no prescription should be considered "out of network." I believe the majority of us have experienced this.

Please consider donating to help Melissa cover her medical costs. No amount is too small. She has a long journey ahead and she should be focused on her health and recovery rather than the financial stress of her care. Asking for financial help is uncomfortable and awkward, but I can't stand by and watch a loved one fight cancer and drown in medical debt.
