On Saturday, March 14th, Phoebe, an 8-year-old Papillon and Border Collie mix, suddenly became very ill. Phoebe is an important part of the Manor School community, where she brings comfort and motivation to many students. She has a huge personality and a loving presence. However, she was not acting like herself out of the blue and seemed low on energy. By Sunday morning, her skin looked yellow, and she was breathing heavily. Her family rushed her to the local emergency vet, where tests were done to find out what was wrong. The local vet did all he could to treat and stabilize her while waiting for the test results. The next day, they learned that Phoebe had developed a serious autoimmune disease that was damaging her red blood cells and filling her body with toxins. Phoebe was taken hours away to Cornell Animal Hospital for treatment, where she received a blood transfusion and stayed for five days. The staff at Cornell took great care of her and even arranged video calls for her family. Sadly, while Phoebe was at the hospital, the families 15-year-old Sheltie Fynn fell ill with pancreatitis and liver failure. Despite the emergency vet visit he passed away, leaving the family heartbroken. After Fynn’s death Pheobe returned home. Phoebe traveled back to Cornell days later for another blood transfusion but miraculously started to increase her red blood cells. Cornell decided not to do the transfusion and fully examined her. With her garden angel Fynn she has continued to get better with regular blood tests and medications. By March 31st, her body started to make new red blood cells at the bone marrow level, but she still needs to heal and have long term care. Although the vet bills have added up to $10,000 to date, the family knows that Phoebe is a beloved member of their family, and her life is priceless. As a result, the children at school will continue to benefit from her unconditional love. Fynn will forever be missed!
