Hey, I'm Paul-Marc, or 'Paulie' to most of you. If you know me, you both know, and probably prefer, my dog Chase. She is a 4 year old Belgian Mal, sharp as a tack and a ADUK registered assistance dog. She is my most loyal companion and quite literally my saviour. She is smarter, more popular and better looking than I will ever be. And she is in trouble and desperatly needs my help.
6 days ago Chase showed rare signs of slowing down. And if you know her, or Malinoise in general, you know they dont do slow. I took her to the vet the next day and despite a decline in her energy levels and some meds, no real concerns were raised.
But by the following day she couldn't get out of bed. For the first time ever she wasn't right by my side. She couldn't walk with me through the fields around our house, nor get herself into the car. She would watch my every move, but within 72 hours she went from a boundless, healthy 4 year old to a dog that couldnt raise her head and it was only her eyes that followed me as i tried to pick her up.
I raced her to an emergency vet who was unable to treat or diagnose her but who referred us to the Langford Animal Hospital in Bristol. It was a four hour journey that she very nearly didn't survive. Although we still aren't exactly sure what's causing it, her red blood cells are dying and she is unable to generate new ones. Her body is closing down and I have been watching my best friend slip away.
But she is brave. And she is battling like a m*ther f*cker. She is now getting the best care possible in a 24/7 ICU and I am doing everything in my power to help her find a way to overcome this. She is undergoing a series of blood transfusions, CT scans, steroids and imuno-supresants to help stabilise her tired body and soul. She is weak, but digging in like i need her too. There are ups and downs. Sometimes she is able to stand and recognise me. Sometimes she is too weak to raise her head.
Today she has made a small breakthrough after a large transfusion and trial on some new medication. Then another set back as her body once again destroyed what had been introduced. The more she gets, the better the prognosis, but as you can imagine, all of this comes at a huge cost. I am emptying my tanks to support her. But she needs more. And despite selling my car and any assets I can, at some point, I'm not going to be able to keep up.
WHEN she makes it out of the ICU she is also going to need medication and care at home for weeks if not months. And I need her to come home with me. I'm asking if those of you that know and love her, and even those of you who don't, to help me give her the best chance possible of making it home to me. I still don't know how long she needs to be in the ICU, nor how many more transfusions she will need. But I do know every penny counts.
I'm not looking to recoup anything I have already invested in keeping her with me. I don't care, I just want to know that if it takes one more night, one more transfusion, one more scan, I can give it to her. I know the world is a mess right now, and that we are all battling it out, there are bigger causes and tougher fights happening... But this one is mine. And I owe it to Chase to do everything I can for her
Please help me get my buddy home so I can look after her.
