In April of 2023 I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease which started me on dialysis three times per week at 4 ½ hours per session. With travel to and from it is typically 6 to 6 ½ hours every other day. The long hours and the aftereffects of dialysis, fatigue and exhaustion, make it very difficult to do anything physically or cognitively after treatments. This has made it exceedingly difficult to continue my work schedule of 40 to 60 hours a week as a construction project manager. A job that I absolutely loved to do and took pride in working hard every day to provide for my family and myself. In an effort to counteract the daily time spent at dialysis, I enrolled in a Home Hemodialysis training program which would enable me to perform dialysis at my leisure, preferably at night after work hours. This would free me up to get back to my normal work schedule and continue to provide my income while maintaining the necessary dialysis treatments. In June of 2023, during my seventh training session, I suffered an air embolism in my brain when an air bubble was introduced into one of my catheter lines. The air bubble went straight to my brain and caused me to have a severe stroke which rendered me completely paralyzed on the entire left side of my body for several weeks. While I have worked hard and made some progress in rehabilitation, I still suffer from severe debilitating effects of the stroke. Since this event I have not been able to work and have depleted my entire life savings and retirement funds just trying to survive daily life. At the same time, I am trying to get a desperately needed kidney transplant which bears its own high costs for medical bills, prescriptions, travel, lodging, 24-hour caregiver costs, etc. My estimated out of pocket costs and my goal for donations is at $120,000.00. I have worked hard my entire life and have never asked for a handout or a hand-up before. I have always been the one to push forward and push through no matter the obstacle. Asking for support like this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. But I’m asking because I still have hope. I want my life back. I want to be there for my family for many more years to come. I want to play with my new grandchild and my future grandchildren.
