Please help me and my cat recover from a fire!

Around 4:30 AM on July 29th, 2024, an electrical fire broke out on the 3rd floor of my building, which is also the art collective known as DRTY SMMR. As a result, the entire third-floor unit was destroyed, and there was extensive smoke and water damage to the second-floor and ground-floor units. The entire building has been condemned until further notice. A pet tragically died in the third-floor unit. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but we are now left without a home.

House fires, especially, are my worst fear. Strangely enough, I had a dream about my kitchen being on fire three days before. I'm still trying to process what has happened, but I need to stay positive and ask for financial assistance. The following is a breakdown of what I am seeking help for:

  • $3000 - Security Deposit
I owe my sub-letter $1000 the remaining $2000 is my portion of the security deposit as the sole leaseholder. it will be difficult to get my security deposit back for a few months because the Management Company is known for being difficult to communicate with and unaccommodating. They have not checked on any of us, and the only representative I interacted with was an insurance adjuster who was cold, didn’t answer any questions, and demanded that we move our belongings by that evening because he was going to start demolition that night. I am relying on this money to go toward a security deposit to secure a new place to live.

  • $3000 - for the following (I did not have Renter's Insurance as I did not require it with my lease)
All of the furniture in our unit suffered extensive smoke and/or water damage. This money would go toward a new mattress, bed frame, desk, desk chair, sofa, and coffee table, as well as items for the kitchen and bathroom.

The remaining money will help me with expenses such as gas and toll money as I travel back and forth from Brooklyn to my dad’s place in New Jersey to go to work, view new apartments, and try to stay on track with my routine.

- Pay the costs associated with moving into a new pet-friendly place, broker fee, renter's insurance, pet fees, and bill/utilities set up for a new apartment
- Legal Fees for the possibility of looking into legal action for compensation

I am extremely grateful for any help during this time. The way that the Brooklyn Music Community, Queer Community, and friends have quickly reached out to offer help is truly touching.
