Medical Operation That Never Went as Planned
I am Alieu Mboge, a native of Dankunku Village, nestled in the heart of The Gambia. For over three decades, I lived and worked in the United Kingdom, pursuing a better life with the vision of one day returning to invest in the soil that raised me. That vision became a reality when I returned permanently to The Gambia, setting up poultry farming and agricultural projects in my native Niamina. It was more than a business it was a dream finally fulfilled.
But life, as it often does, had a cruel twist in store.
On a routine journey to my farm, the unexpected struck. My vehicle lost control and somersaulted multiple times, landing in a crumpled wreck on the side of a dusty rural road. I was conscious enough to feel the immediate numbness radiating from my neck downwards a sign that something was terribly wrong.
I was rushed to the Sharab Medical Center in Kanifing, where it was revealed that I had sustained severe trauma to my cervical spine and nervous system. A complex surgery was required one that had to be done urgently to prevent irreversible damage.
Initially, the medical team advised that I travel to Dakar or abroad for specialised spinal treatment. But due to the critical nature of my injuries, I was declared a flight risk, and an air ambulance costing tens of thousands of dollars was beyond my financial reach. I had no choice but to settle for what was available: an operation at Sharab Medical Center.
The surgery proceeded. But things went terribly wrong.
Instead of recovery, I was left worse than before. The operation resulted in damage to my nervous system, particularly affecting my neck. Today, I am unable to lift my head or look upwards, and I experience constant discomfort, reduced mobility, and neurological dysfunctions that have reshaped my daily life.
I spent nearly every penny I had saved from my years abroad the money I had earmarked for growing my business and supporting my family on the surgery, medication, and post-operative care. My poultry and agricultural projects, once thriving, have since stagnated and been abandoned, as I am no longer physically able to manage them.
Recently, I was fortunate enough to secure a medical admission at a specialist spinal and neurology hospital in India, which offers a corrective surgery and rehabilitative programme that could potentially restore my functionality. The cost is $14,000, covering surgery, therapy, accommodation, and care.
This amount is beyond my current means. My savings are depleted. My businesses are no longer operational. My family and I are now reaching out to the broader public, appealing for help from individuals, organisations, philanthropists, or anyone with the heart to support a second chance at life.
This is not just a cry for medical aid; it is a plea for restoration to reclaim my dignity, to walk with my head held high again, and to return to the work I love: farming, feeding communities, and building a better Gambia.
If you can help me in any way through donations, sponsorships, or connections to charitable medical foundations please know that your support could make the difference between continued suffering and a hopeful recovery.
