Immigration status in Canada and hospital bills

I am passionate about helping people and community work. It has always been my desire to be a voice for people whose voices have been silenced in some form and be an advocate for underrepresented minorities in the society. This passion was inspired by watching my mum take care of me single-handedly all my life and while doing so, helping those around her in any way she could. My mum has been a caterer and I have watched her take care of me and everyone around her with love and without any complaints.

I created this Go Fund me to raise money for my outstanding tuition and last year's fees, lawyer fees, and for my mum’s medical bills. All my life, my mum has been the one taking care of me financially. It has just been the both of us. With her business, we were comfortable, and she took me to the best schools she could afford. It was my desire to come to Canada to pursue a law degree and my mum was willing to do whatever it took to see my dreams come to fruition.

In 2018, I got news that my mother was really sick and had to be rushed to the hospital. Around that time, my study permit was due for renewal and because, I had to wait until my mother was doing better and was able to raise the money, to send in my application. Meanwhile, in the course of waiting, my status in Canada expired and that meant me also applying for a restoration of status. I knew it was late, but I also included a letter explaining my situation and was hopeful that it would be understood. In 2019, the worst thing happened-my mother (who is diabetic) fell into a coma for 5 months. She was diagnosed with Transient Ischemic Attack, which is a condition that is similar to a mild stroke. My mum’s deteriorating health gave a massive hit to her finances, which in turn affected my school. I wasn’t in school because I wasn’t able to pay the tuition fees. I looked for alternatives. But there was only so much I could do cause I was still waiting for my study permit and without my study permit, I can’t work. With the help of some people that lent me money, I was able to pay off my outstanding fees and take a semester of classes. After I paid off the borrowed money from the little that my mum could afford to send, I was stuck in the same situation again of not being able to take classes because I was owing tuition fees.

I waited almost 2 years for my study permit and while still being hopeful, I was recently told that my study permit has been rejected because of lack of proof that I would leave Canada after I’m done school. I have 16 days left before my voluntary leave expires to appeal the decision or face getting a deportation order. I need to hire a lawyer and I cannot afford to. With everything happening, my mum just got rushed to the hospital again and is currently unconscious. She is all I have and need to pay her hospital bills and I currently can’t work without my papers.

Hiring an immigration lawyer is really expensive and for a judicial review, it costs about $5000 for representation. I currently have an outstanding fee of $7902 and need about $12,000 for my last year and would also need to send money back home to my mother as she is a diabetic patient. My goal is to get $30000 but would put $32000 as gofundme has a processing fee of 2.9% plus $0.30 per donation.

I can’t afford to go back now with no degree after putting in so much. I just want to finish my undergraduate degree and pursue my dreams of being a lawyer and serving the community while taking care of my mum as much as she has taken care of me. I assure you that your financial support will not be in vain. I will continually pay forward the kindness that you have shown me by working hard until I can be a constant representation of positive impact in the community. I sincerely appreciate any amount that you can give to help me and thank you for sharing.  - Thank you,
