Mango is a 6 year old maltese x shih tzu. A few days ago, Mango escaped from the door and ran onto the road where she was hit by a van. We were shocked because she has never ran out of the gates before nor onto the road. We feel so helpless that it happened so quickly and we were so close but unable to do anything. We rushed her to the emergency hospital for immediate treatment.
We were told she was in a stable condition with a fractured right hip and left leg. Her liver was also hit but was in a stable condition. They told us luckily her bladder had not ruptured. We were really relieved that there was a chance that Mango could survive.
A few hours later we got a phone call from the vet. Her bladder has herniated and she had nerve damage resulting in the loss of sensation to her right leg. She needed immediate surgery for her bladder. There was a chance that the sensation could come back as the nerve does not seem fully severed by the bone fragment in her hip. If she does not regain sensation of her leg after the surgery she may need to be let go.
The next day we visited Mango after her bladder surgery. She is in a stable condition and recovering. There was a sliver of hope when we got news she also regained sensation of her right leg. She is currently for her condition to be stable for her hip surgery.
Currently our costs up to date for her bladder surgery and staying at the hospital is around $3500. Her hip surgery included a $3000 deposit not including medication, and supplies in order to care for her after.
There is a lot of hope for Mango recovering at this point. She is the first dog we ever had in our family and she means the world to us. Seeing her in such a frightened and severe state has broken our hearts. We want to do all we can to fight for Mango and anything that can help us fund her surgeries and recovery would mean everything to us.
We will keep everyone updated on Mango's situation. If there is any excess money it will be donated to SPCA Vancouver.
