Our 1.5-year old Akbash dog Lucy is badly injured in the veterinary hospital right now.
She climbed out of her enclosure (with 8-foot fences) yesterday while we were out of town and got hit by a car. Luckily a neighbour called us and one of our dear friends went to her rescue and rushed her to us and we were able to get her to the veterinary hospital.
So far, Lucy has had the necessary x-rays and pain medication to get her this far but we are urgently asking for your help to save her life and get her the leg surgery she needs. Unfortunately, she lost one front paw and has a broken pelvis and won’t be able to walk for 6-8 weeks. In order to walk again she will also need a prosthetic limb. Lucy is such a happy, vibrant and loving giant pup, we cannot bear to let her go (euthanasia was offered to us as an alternative). Her medical bill is estimated to be $15,000 including the surgery to remove her paw and hospitalization for another day.
Her doctor is giving a good prognosis but warned us that her condition is extremely serious and surgery always carries a risk. But she will not survive without it. As you know, dog is man's best friend and Lucy is no exception. She is a guardian breed and as such has protected our other pets (including chickens) from the local coyotes. She is both a working dog and a loving family member. Her days as a working dog are definitely over, but with surgery she will be able to lead a happy and full family life with walks, cuddles and lots of play.

We are still in shock that she even escaped her custom-made enclosure and this has happened to her, especially after the traumatic puppyhood she had (we took her in, after she'd gone back to the breeder twice and we all suspect she was maltreated by her first owner).
Any donation you can make to help us pay for her surgery, medical care and rehabilitation therapy will be greatly appreciated and we will update you with recovery photos and stories as they happen.
