On May 28, 2023 our sister, Love Serik, and her husband, Chris Serik, delivered their first child, a daughter, Juniper Jade Serik, at 27 weeks old, during which she needed an emergency c-section. Love has a rare form of MD, called Collagen VI myopathy, and developed severe pre-eclampsia during the tail end of her second trimester at 25 weeks. She was admitted to the hospital a few weeks prior to delivery. The Maternal Fetal Medicine team tried their best efforts to keep both her and her unborn daughter stable in the hospital for as long as possible. However, regardless of such efforts, both of their lives were at risk as Love’s body started going into HELLP syndrome, in addition to a placental abruption occurring directly prior to immediate delivery. Juniper was born weighing only 1 lb, 15 oz and was immediately intubated and hooked up to all the life-saving machines needed to keep her fighting being born so prematurely. Juniper is in the NICU and is expected to remain there until fully developed and healthy enough to go home. This is and will continue to be a long journey. They all have a big fight ahead of them, but “though she be little, she is fierce”. With the medical expenses already mounting, the cost of doing day-to-day living, and traveling and visiting the baby to provide the support and comfort she needs while in the NICU, an ongoing financial burden is building for the Serik family.
