Please Help Local Hero Louis “Kengi” Carr
Donation protected
My good friend Louis Carr, affectionately known to those who know him as “Kengi”, is an artist, activist, lecturer, community organizer, mentor, caretaker to 3 rescue dogs whom he adores, selfless friend, and an all around wonderful human being.
Kengi is truly a local hero. He has been a force in the Black Lives Matter movement for many years, likewise in LGBTQ+ rights, and an outspoken advocate helping those struggling with homelessness here in Los Angeles.
Through his photography he has shone a light on the everyday experiences and challenges facing many Angelenos in an effort to give voice to the stories of so many who are voiceless. To this end he has self published several books, and has also created a non-profit www.dosomethingsaturday.com designed to motivate others to use their time and talents to make positive change in the community.
Like many of us, recent events have caused unimaginable upheaval in our lives. I know these are extremely challenging and difficult times for all.
Kengi is in a group among us most vulnerable to COVID-19, his immune system is compromised, he struggles with sickle cell disease, and has beaten cancer.
I learned a few days ago that Kengi has been sick and unable to get out of bed for weeks. He has not been able to afford to buy groceries, or pay bills. On the day we spoke he was just finding the strength to move from his bed to a nearby chair, and had come to terms with the fact that he would need to ask friends for help.
Kengi has faced homelessness before, and is concerned that he is on the verge of homelessness again. He is afraid that he will also have to give up his beloved dogs.
Please join me in helping to support my dear friend. Whatever you can give will go directly to Kengi for ongoing medical care, rent, food, and bills to help sustain him through this difficult time, so that he doesn’t lose his apartment and his furry family.
“My community work, art and photography are rooted in my love for humanity. My desire to make things better for those of us at the very bottom. I want people to see humanity in my images and in my community work.“ ~ Louis “Kengi” Carr
