*PLEASE HELP SUPPORT OUR FAMILY THROUGH OUR CANCER BATTLE*
On New Year’s Eve, my Mom Liz Sussman drove herself to the ER in massive pain. She told me not to worry. After several hours of test and needles, Mom came home. She left the Hospital after being told that they wanted to admit her for pancreas cancer that has spread to her lungs.
She told me again, don’t worry. Then another week of more Hospital tests, biopsies and then the appointment with the Oncologist Specialist. Last Thursday all the test results came back and we found that Mom has stage 4 Lung Cancer that has spread to other areas. My heart dropped.
My Mom has been the only thing I have had for the last 22 years of my life. This woman is my Mom and my Dad. She taught me to be kind, caring and strong. Most of all, how to be a man, survivor and rely on nobody but yourself. That is who my Mom is.
My Mom’s story started at 6 months old. She was left in a crib alone as her mother ran away with her only sibling. My Mom was a 9th grade dropout, most unlikely to ever succeed. She beat the odds and became the most experienced women in her Field, which happens to also be a male dominated engineering field. During this time, she also became a certified Boy Scout Leader for two dens at once. That is who my mom is.
My Mom’s years before me is an amazing story of perseverance which most of us couldn’t even imagine. What I can tell you, the last 22 years I have know the most amazing, strongest person I have ever known. No matter what came at her (physical or mental), she fought, and she fought hard. In 2007, I was only 10 and she had a spinal fusion for a broken back, she was in a body brace for 6 months. She got up everyday to greet me, feed me and provide for me. We have no family here, nor did Mom have any friends or support. In 1997 (after 3 years of commuting 150 miles per day), Mom while pregnant was relocated by her company to CT to startup the first of its kind colocation Traffic Center with the State Police in Bridgeport. I had nobody but mom and that was all I ever needed.
For the last 13 years, Mom has been getting up at 3AM and commuting 160 miles a day to NY to continue her career and to help me with a stable/structured life and get me a college education. This does not include every storm and major event that she had to stay in NY and work 36-72 hours straight. She wanted me to have everything she didn't. She did it. But now she has fallen and is weak, she needs our help. My story can go on forever when it comes to talking about my Mom, but this is so hard. Mom is out of work, bills will be coming in, treatment costs, we need help and Mom won’t ask. Please help us through this battle. Anything will help. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Please also share your positive stories of my Mom. I know how many of my friends that she has helped and mentored but I don’t know it all. Please share your stories.
PEACE and LOVE, Ari
