On the 7th of December 2018, my son, Leandro accompanied me to my native Colombia following the death of my mother. He didn’t need to, as I had everything under control, plus my mother (his grandmother) had a long and fulfilled life. But Leandro insisted on supporting me because that’s just the way he is.
He bought his ticket and we travelled together to South America. We buried my mother with grace and celebrated her life, but I needed to return to work in the UK, as I work for the NHS. My son, bless him, insisted on remaining in Colombia to tie-up the loose ends concerning his grandmother’s affairs and also staying with his mother for a few days too.
On 23rd December 2018, whilst he was visiting mother’s home, to feed the family pet, Leandro suffered a heart attack. Leandro fell and banged his head in process. His young stepbrother, (9 years old boy) who accompanied him at the time bravely ran into the street to alert neighbours and members of the public.
Luckily, good Samaritans called a taxi which rapidly responded. Unfortunately, Leandro was not breathing nor was his heart beating. Once Leandro was brought to the hospital, they pronounced him dead. A doctor called Heidi De La Rosa noticed him gasping for air and therefore I am eternally grateful she and her team did not give up on Leandro. In the final desperate attempt to revive him they administered CPR and he was brought back to life.
In the past Leandro and I (including my colleagues at the MoD UK) have raised funds for the local hospital following a mudslide that killed more than 250 people in April 2017 as those events happened close to my hometown, so I know the resilience of these people.
Tragically, his brain had been deprived of oxygen for too long and he has suffered significant brain damage. Subsequently, he has contracted pneumonia and a poly-microbial diseases since being admitted to the hospital. This hospital in Neiva Colombia it is a small, ill-equipped medical facility, in the poor rural community of Huila Colombia, but the amazing staff there are performing tasks that approach miracles.
To add to the heartbreak, I found out to my despair that he hadn’t taken out medical travel insurance as he had spontaneously bought his ticket and flown out merely hours after purchase. A ticket he needn’t have bought but only did so to show me support. Had I known I would have naturally insisted he get cover or even provided it myself. The whole situation is harrowing beyond despair.
He has made some progress and is no longer on life-support; and is no longer in a coma. But the doctors are unsure of when he is aware of his surroundings. His condition remains extremely critical, but we hope and pray that he becomes stable enough that he can return to the UK.
But his situation is dire. Up until January 2019 we have incurred medical costs of approximately £25.000 to which we have no means of paying. His mum’s health medical insurance will contribute to mitigate some of this amount, and for the remaining, we are currently organising alternative solutions. However, the main and most important aspect of this whole situation is to ensure Leandro gets the medical rehabilitation needed to make a reasonable recovery.
I am stating this appeal to raise enough funds to fly Leandro back home to the UK in order to get the much-needed care he needs. We accept that our son will never be the same loving and thoughtful Croydon boy that we knew, but we are desperate to fly him home so his development can continue and he can have a fighting chance!

El 7 de diciembre de 2018, mi hijo Leandro me acompañó a mi Colombia natal luego de la muerte de mi madre. Leandro no necesitaba hacerlo, ya que yo tenía todo bajo control, además mi madre (su abuela) tuvo una vida larga y satisfactoria. Pero Leandro insistió en apoyarme porque así es el.
Compró su boleto y viajamos juntos a Sudamérica. Enterramos a mi madre y luego nos reunimos para agradecer y celebramos su vida. Yo trabajo para el ministerio de salud del Reino Unido y consecuentemente tuve que volver a trabajar. Mi hijo, que Dios lo bendiga, insistió en permanecer en Colombia para atar los cabos sueltos de los asuntos de su abuela y también compartir más tiempo con su madre.
El 23 de Dicimbre de 2018, mientras visitaba la casa de mi madre, para alimentar a la mascota de la familia, sufrió un ataque al corazón. Cayó y se golpeó la cabeza. Su joven hermanastro, (niño de 9 años) que lo acompañó en ese momento, valientemente corrió a la calle para alertar a los vecinos y al público.
Por suerte, los buenos samaritanos llamaron a un taxi que respondió rápidamente. Desafortunadamente, él no estaba respirando ni su corazón latía. Una vez que llegó al hospital, lo declararon muerto. Una médico llamado Heidy de la Rosa lo notó jadeando por aire y, por lo tanto, estoy eternamente agradecido que ella y su equipo no se hayan rendido con Leandro. En el último intento desesperado de reanimarlo, le administraron RCP y le devolvieron la vida.
En el pasado, Leandro y yo (incluidos mis colegas del Ministerio de Defensa del Reino Unido) recaudamos fondos para el hospital local de Neiva luego de un alud que mató a más de 250 personas en abril de 2017. Ese evento ocurrió cerca de mi ciudad natal.
Trágicamente, el cerebro de Leandro se privó de oxígeno por demasiado tiempo y ha sufrido un daño cerebral significativo. Posteriormente, ha contraído neumonía y enfermedades polimicrobianas desde que ingresó al hospital. Este hospital en Neiva Colombia es una instalación médica pequeña y mal equipada, , localizada en la región del Huila Colombia, pero el increíble personal de allí está realizando tareas que se acercan a los milagros.
Para aumentar la angustia, descubrí con desesperación que Leandro no compro un seguro de viajero que le cubriera los gastos médicos en caso de una emergencia. Leandro compro su boleto de forma espontánea y salió de Londres solo unas horas después de la compra. Un boleto que no debió comprar, pero solo lo hizo para mostrarme el apoyo. Si lo hubiera sabido, habría insistido naturalmente en que se cubriera en salud o incluso lo hubiera proporcionado yo mismo. Toda la situación es desgarradora más allá de la desesperación.
Él ha hecho algunos progresos y ya no está en soporte vital; y tampoco en coma. Pero los médicos no están seguros de cuan consciente el esta y de su entorno. Su condición sigue siendo extremadamente crítica, pero esperamos y rezamos para que se vuelva lo suficientemente estable como para que pueda regresar al Reino Unido.
Su situación es grave. Hasta enero de 2019, hemos incurrido en costos médicos de aproximadamente £ 25,000 a los que no tenemos medios de pago. El seguro médico de salud de su madre contribuirá a mitigar parte o mayor de esta cantidad, y para el resto, actualmente estamos organizando soluciones alternativas. Sin embargo, el aspecto principal y más importante de toda esta situación es garantizar que Leandro obtenga la rehabilitación médica necesaria para una recuperación razonable.
Estoy tratando de recaudar fondos suficientes para llevar a Leandro de regreso al Reino Unido con el fin de obtener la atención tan necesaria que necesita. Aceptamos que nuestro hijo nunca será el mismo amoroso y considerado chico de Croydon que conocimos, pero estamos desesperados por llevarlo a casa para que su desarrollo pueda continuar y él pueda tener una oportunidad más en la vida.
