Please Help Laila Conquer Cancer

Donation protected
Our names are Grace O. and Jojo C. (Suzanne’s colleagues), and we’ve started this gofundme to support the Axelsen family, whose 3-year-old daughter, Laila, has recently been diagnosed with leukemia.

Suzanne and Anton have identical three-year-old girls, Laila and Annika.

Sadly, on August 5th, 2022, one of their twins, Laila, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Suddenly, the Axelsen's lives changed forever. Suzanne, who works as a Registered Nurse/ Nurse Continence Advisor, had to stop working, so she could remain at Laila’s bedside at BC Children’s Hospital while receiving multiple rounds of chemotherapy.

Anton has been at Laila’s bedside since her diagnosis, and he will try to stay with her at home as long as he can. But he will eventually have to return to work to support his family.

On August 13th, Laila was discharged from the hospital; and she is now an outpatient at the BCCH. But with their current situation, their family will need to travel from their home to BC Children's Hospital many times with the possibility of having to stay overnight… for the next TWO years.

Since Laila’s diagnosis, she has needed and still requires to go through several treatments, procedures/ surgeries.
Which includes:
• chemotherapy
• intrathecal chemotherapy (chemo into her spine)
• Several lumbar punctures
• bone marrow biopsies
• blood transfusions
• platelet transfusions
• Portacath insertion in the operating room (to be able to infuse the chemo drugs into her tiny body)
• Pharmaceutical drugs to relieve her pain post chemo treatments

Moreover, several days after Laila’s diagnosis, the oncologists reported that Annika has a significant risk of developing the same type of leukemia since they are identical twins and share the same genetic makeup. Hence, like her sister, Annika will also have to be tested frequently and monitored for life.

This diagnosis turned the Axelsens world upside down.… But they remain hopeful.
Mom, Suzanne (who is a registered nurse), knows the next several years will be challenging and unpredictable for their daughters.

Anton will need to work full time while simultaneously trying to be present at all of Laila’s cancer treatments. He will have to financially support his wife and two daughters, Annika and Laila. Their family will only have Dad, Anton, earning for the whole family.

And This is where WE, as their VILLAGE, need to step in and help support this kind family.

The money raised will go directly to Laila and this will help with her:
• medical expenses (not covered by extended health),
• in-home medical care (not covered by extended health),
• Pharmacy bills
• gas for their countless trips to BC children's hospital
• Child care for their other daughter Annika
• Laila’s daily activities and food bills

These funds will enable Suzanne and Anton to focus all their time and energy on supporting their twins; while Laila is getting her cancer treatments at BC children’s in Vancouver.

Lastly, the Axelsens are thankful for all the love and messages they have received, since Laila’s diagnosis.

PLEASE donate any amount, and share this gofundme page. They are all greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
