PLEASE help my friend, Laci. Back in 2014, Laci was assaulted. She suffered a massive hit to the face that fractured her zygomatic and maxilla bones, caused cervical vertebrae injuries, and severed the trigeminal nerve into multiple pieces. It was a traumatic brain injury that left her with permanent nerve and tissue damage.
These injuries have gotten worse with age and significantly impacted her quality of life. She now suffers from trigeminal neuralgia, known as "the worst pain known to mankind". Her daily life is one of excruciating agony, as the damaged nerves cause the sensation of being on fire or being electrocuted. In addition to the nerve damage, her skull didn't heal properly, causing a malunion of her face and jaw. Due to this combination of injuries, she struggles with the most basic functions: eating, talking, walking, and simply living life.
Through all this, she has continued to work and raise her 12 year-old daughter. As the only breadwinner of her little family, she has had no choice but to work. The only hope of restoring her quality of life involves multiple painstaking craniofacial, neuro, and vascular surgeries. Yet, her insurance had refused to cover them, calling these surgeries "elective" and "not medically necessary", despite ample documentation from multiple world-class neurosurgeons. In December of 2024, she lost her insurance, so this past year, all of her medical expenses have been covered out of pocket.
After much research, she discovered an opportunity to get the surgery she needs through a medical tourism company, where she would head to Germany to have the bone fixed, along with an allograft - a nerve graft to fix the nerve damage. These surgeries would help restore the function and use of her jaw, mouth, and facial muscles and provide desperately needed relief from the constant agony.
She has worked until she was ragged. She has sacrificed, saved, starved, hustled, and fought to afford this surgery. Through a combination of grants from different charities, selling everything of value, using her life's savings, and the few loans she could take out with a credit ruined by medical bills, she was able to book this surgery.
The surgery has had to be postponed and rescheduled multiple times now due to her financial situation, and the window of opportunity is quickly shrinking. If not completed before the end of the year, she will lose the biggest portion of her funding. She is also working against her own body, as the worse the damage gets, the less chances of success the surgery will have. As the sole provider for her family, there will be no income while she is off for the surgery and the recovery time, which will now be at least 12 weeks. She needs help covering rent, food, and utilities while she recovers.
I am hoping to raise at least $2,000 to cover the minimum basics. ALL money will go directly to Laci to cover her expenses after the surgery.
