Please Help Keep Riley's Heart Beating Strong

Hello, my name is Richard Roy. My dog, Riley, is not just a pet — he's my world. A 9-year-old Shih Tzu-Yorkshire Terrier mix (or Shorkie), Riley has been with me through the darkest moments of my life. Diagnosed with congestive heart failure last April, Riley has remained the most energetic, loving, and vivacious companion I could ever ask for. Anyone who knows him knows how full of life he is, constantly wagging his tail and full of joy. However, since his diagnosis, life has changed in many ways for us both.

For the past 10 months, we’ve been adjusting to a new normal, with shorter walks, no more playing ball (although he still begs for it), and fewer stressful situations — leaving him to become my constant lapdog. Despite all this, his personality remains vibrant, and he’s responded amazingly to his medication: Spironolactone, Furosemide, and Vetmedin (Pimobendan). These medications have kept his heart functioning and allowed him to stay active and loving, but without them, his condition will worsen quickly.

I’m currently in between jobs, and with multiple interviews lined up in the coming week, I’m doing everything I can to get back on my feet. However, due to financial struggles, I’ve been unable to afford the necessary tests and follow-up care for Riley. As a result, multiple vets have denied refills for his medication without him first receiving a series of tests: NT-proBNP test, ECG, liver and kidney X-rays, and heart & lung bloodwork. At the time of writing this I had just over 3 weeks’ worth of medication left now I’m at the last 10 days before I’m out of options — and without these medications, Riley’s health will decline rapidly, possibly leading to euthanasia as the only choice.

Riley isn’t just a dog. He’s the reason I’ve made it through some of the hardest times in my life, from the loss of my sister, watching my father fight for his life, to helping me battle & conquer suicidal depression. Riley has been my rock, my constant, and the source of unconditional love that’s kept me going. I can’t imagine a world without him, and the thought of not being able to care for him in his time of need breaks me down.

I’ve tried everything — selling my Mac, my drum set, clothes, and even my mattress — but so far, I haven’t had any luck in covering the cost of his medical needs. I’m reaching out today to humbly ask for any help. Even the smallest donation will make a world of difference. Riley deserves more time, more love, and more chances to be the happy, playful dog he is, and I would tremendously appreciate your help to make this happen.
