Hello friends! My name is Heather. I am an Army Veteran, a paralegal, a wife, and the mother of two beautiful daughters and of five incredible stepchildren. My fourteen year old daughter, Kayley, was born with a permanent disability as result of a rare genetic mutation of the ARX gene (Aristaless Related Homeobox).
Life threatening seizures are one of the many health challenges Kayley faces. As Kayley gets older, her seizures will continue to increase in frequency and duration, as we have seen in the past year. When Kayley has a seizure it is imperative that she receives emergency medication, but 99% of her seizures occur during the night when the risk that they will go unnoticed is the greatest. Kayley is at risk for SUDEP (“Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy”). It is my greatest concern as a parent to wake up each morning as I do and check on Kayley to ensure she made it through the night. No parent should have to feel this way.
Our family has spent the entirety of Kayley’s life searching for a solution to alert us of her nighttime seizures. Finally, and after a great deal of research, we learned about service dogs who are trained to alert patients and caregivers of oncoming seizures-- a service that could potentially save our daughter’s life.
We just received good news that the organization, Doggie Does Good, Inc. (DDG) has approved our application for a service dog for Kayley. This highly trained dog will sleep in the bed with Kayley and will alert us of any seizure activity using a button that will trigger a notification on our phones. In addition, Kayley’s service dog will be her 24-hour companion and will accompany her at all times.
Once DDG identifies a match for her needs, they will spend a full year training the dog to aid Kayley. They will travel from California to Houston to work with Kayley and our family during this process.
The cost to our family for this specialized service dog will be $35,000. Though this amount seems overwhelming, we strongly believe that it is well worth the cost of potentially saving our daughter’s life.
