On Christmas morning, while getting ready for church, my Aunt heard a loud noise from the bathroom upstairs and ran to discover that Kasia had suffered cardiac arrest. She immediately tried to help her and dialed 911. The ambulance came quickly and discovered that she was in ventricular fibrillation and it took them over 20 minutes to get Kasia into a sustainable cardiac rhythm. She has been in ICU for 9 days now and has not made the progress that we were hoping for. Due to the prolonged amount of time without sufficient oxygen and blood flow to her brain, one neurologist has already declared that her brain damage is irreversible and that the family needs to decide if they want to put her in long term care where she will remain on a ventilator, tube feedings, and drainage tubes (to name a few) for the rest of her life versus removing her from life support only to watch her slip away. The family reached out to their priest and he suggested a second opinion. Another neurologist recommended giving Kasia a full 7-10 days to try to regain some type of voluntary brain function. We are on day 9 and Kasia is still not able to breathe on her own for more than 20 minutes and isn't really responding to any external stimuli. Her family has been in contact with Gift of Life Michigan so that if Kasia cannot live her life as she had hoped and dreamed, she can help someone else through donating her organs. This is a very emotionally and financially taxing time for the Mrukowicz Family. It is a decision that no mother, father, or sister should have to face. While Kasia's health is in the hands of God and her healthcare providers, I am asking for a little emotional and financial support from anyone that is willing to help. If you would consider a small donation, prayers, or sharing some words of wisdom to help get Kasia and her family through this very scary and painful time, we would all be forever grateful.
This could have happened to any of us or our loved ones. I am a firm believer that everything comes full circle in this life. The hope is that even strangers will read this and find it in their hearts to contribute in some way. If we could all do this for each other as needed, it would allow us to focus on healing instead of worrying about medical bills.
"Do unto other as you would have them do unto you." -Matthew 7:12
