Please help Joe's dog Reuben (and Joe too) with our housing!
(Update 2/5/25. I now have a date of mid-March to be out of the house)
My name is Joe Greeley. I'm 60 years old. I am unable to work for health reasons and I have been denied for Disability three times.
The house I'm currently living in was built by my Aunt and Uncle in 1999. When my aunt died of ovarian cancer in October of 2020, the house passed to her son, my cousin. He graciously allowed me to live here as caretaker (he resided in Oak Ridge TN).
Unfortunately, in mid November of 2023 my cousin hit his head and cut it badly. He lived alone and he passed out from blood loss (he was on heavy blood thinners) and bled to death. His body was not found until just before Christmas.
His will left everything to the University of Tennessee, including the house. The will is almost through probate and the house is going to be sold, leaving me with no place to live. I have a very small pension of $500 a month, half of which goes to car insurance and my phone bill. I have a dog (pictured above, his name is Reuben) which means a homeless shelter is out. The waitlist for subsidized housing where I live is two years.
The temperature in Maine stays below freezing for most of the winter, so living in my car is not the most pleasant of options. What I am trying to do is raise enough money to buy a decent camper trailer, put a tow hitch on my car and install a small wood stove (which luckily I already own) to keep warm.
