Hello, my name is Leslie Harr Bley.
I'm writing a story that no parent ever wants to write. My daughter, Jenny Davis Lindstrom, at the age of 47, was diagnosed with appendicial cancer in January of 2021. If you’re fortunate enough, you have never heard of cancer of the appendix. I hadn't.
Jenny was admitted for surgery to remove ovarian fibroids and possible hysterectomy. The shocking result was that the tumors were found on her ovaries and sent to pathology and found to be positive for cancer. Again scheduled for abdominal surgery, thinking it was confined to her ovaries, they found that her abdominal cavity was filled with small tumors, some visible and some not. At this point it was determined that it had begun with her appendix.
This type of cancer is considered terminal. The best hope is for chemo and continued observation of the abdominal cavity. At that time, they removed every affected tissue that was visible and anything that she could live without including a hysterectomy.
In search of a procedure to save her life, she and her husband, Rich, found a renowned physician in Pittsburgh who was known for performing the HIPEC surgery. During another abdominal surgery, her abdomen would be flushed with a particular type of chemo solution. Rich stayed in a VRBO while Jenny was in the hospital for surgery and healing time until she was well enough to travel home. This took about two months.
Once home, she returned to her job at Horizon Air and more follow up. As a result of the numerous surgeries and removal of tissue, she has an extraordinary amount of adhesions and scar tissue. During the last 6 months, she has been admitted to the hospital numerous times for extreme abdominal pain, loss of appetite and inability of her body to digest food. Her average weight before she became sick was around 150 pounds. At 5'8" tall, she now weighs about 100 pounds. Now in Tacoma General hospital since January 19, 2023, she has had 6 surgeries there, trying to close her abdomen again and get back her ability to process food naturally. At last count, she has 5 abdominal drains and still they estimate 2 more surgeries to close her abdomen and maybe be able to go home. On top of that, she has now developed an antibiotic resistant infection. Her husband, in the midst of all this, had a very serious injury that required surgery and her was off his feet for 12 weeks and for the last 3 weeks on unemployment. He and her 2 boys, have been "Rocks" for her holding their home together. Rich spends every minute with her, only returning home for clean clothes and checking the needs of their boys. Jenny herself is such a strong woman, physically, spiritually and emotionally, but the added financial needs are something that she and Rich should not have to deal with. In between all of the procedures, she would return to work, sometimes from home but most often in the office.
They're fortunate enough to have medical insurance that helps but didn't cover the medical and housing costs in Pittsburgh. They owe an additional $60,000 for the surgery alone.
They have never been frivolous spenders in the past but with the loss of both incomes, the bills are compounding daily. Their needs are basic. The house payment, utilities and medical costs not covered. I want to help insure that they still have a home for their family. That Jenny can live whatever time she has, without the financial burden. She is my only daughter and this has been the most difficult time of our lives. My hope and prayer is that anyone who can help financially or with your payers, will pass this on to anyone else who can. God creates miracles everyday and your love and prayers will help make that happen.
I wish you all good health and happiness. God bless you, Leslie
