Hi, I’d like you to meet Jag.
She is a 15 year old quarter horse and a new mom to 2 day old Burt. Burt is doing fantastic, but mom is suffering from a small intestinal strangulation (known as intussusception). The exact cause is not known but this most likely happened during the birthing process.
The blood supply to the strangulated intestine was cut off causing the tissue to die. She was in extreme pain while still trying to nurse her foal. The incredible staff at Iowa State University’s Equine Hospital performed a 6-7 hour jejunocecostomy to remove 15’ of her small intestine. She is in recovery with a long road ahead of her.
During this critical time she will be closely monitored while remaining inpatient.

She will receive IV fluids, antibiotics and pain medications. Eventually a diet will be slowly introduced to allow her gut to heal without having to work too hard. Best case scenario is she meets her daily goals and there are no secondary signs, such as recurrence of colic or laminitis.
As you can imagine, this is a very expensive procedure. Tina, my 24 year old niece and horse owner, has already paid over $12,000 for the surgery, dissolving her savings. The next 2-4 weeks could cost her that much or more.
Please help her to help Jag. Burt goes where Jag goes. They are together at the hospital and though she is struggling, she continues to try to uphold her obligations as Burt’s mom. He will be given supplements when it becomes too hard for her. No donation is too small. Help us give Jag back her swag.
