Please Help Hazel, Our Bichon-Poodle

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

My name is Steven Nguyen and I am creating this campaign for my family's 2 year old Bichon-Poodle.

On May 22nd at approximately 9:25am, Hazel our beloved Bichon Poodle was tragically involved in a hit and run accident in Toronto, just outside of Dundas West Station. After the incident occurred, the driver stepped out to see what had happened and decided to get back inside his vehicle and drive off. The vehicle's wheels had driven over her shoulder and down across her lower body before speeding off. We rushed her to the Veterinary Emergency Clinic where she was placed in ICU. She was in very critical conditions when she arrived at the VEC. The veterinary team was able to stabilize her with fluids and blood transfusion. During the x-ray, a diaphragmatic hernia was found. This is a result of her abdominal organs moving upward into her chest, causing Hazel's diaphragm not being able to expand properly and intake the appropriate amount of air. This became an urgent surgery to help move her diaphragm and other organs back in position to allow her to breathe properly. This was a terrifying moment as there are risks when undergoing anesthesia while not being 100% stabled. Thankfully, this trooper stayed strong and pulled through and the surgery went well. She is breathing normally again with the help of oxygen tubes. She still has multiple bruises around her lungs and will need to be monitored over the next few days.

In regards to Hazel's lower body, she has sustained severe fractures around her pelvis. The pelvic bone connecting to her spine was dislocated and both sides of her pelvis were broken. One side of her pelvic bone was significantly damaged and is unrepairable and will need to be completely removed. Hazel's tailbone was also damaged during the accident and has affected her nerves. Unfortunately, she has lost all feelings in her tail. This is such a crucial part of her body as the tail nerves are connected to her urinary and bowel system. With that being said, she has become incontinent and will no longer be able to control or resist her urine and defecation.

We understand that this past year has been difficult for everyone through this pandemic.  We are humbly asking that you find it in your hearts to please help us and our family through this difficult time. We will be using the funds raised through this GoFundMe campaign to help cover Hazel's surgery and medical expenses.

The estimate for her surgeries are approximately $25,000. Below is our first deposit for the ICU, stabilization and her first immediate surgery for her diaphragm. Her Pelvis surgery is expected to be on May 25th and is estimated to be between $8,000 - $12,000.

Hazel is the most sweetest, gentle, loving and caring family member to us. Every day we wake up, she is there and ready to greet you and jumpstart your day. She brightens our day with her loving energy and fills our life with joy and happiness. Whenever anyone leaves and comes home, whether it be several minutes or couple of hours, she would run circles around you and jump up and down as if you were gone for weeks. She is an incredibly smart and intelligent dog. She is also very timid of new people, but once she gets to know you, she loves to play and cuddle. She could take belly rubs for hours and days.

Hazel means the world to us and there are no words to express how much we love her. She is loved by everyone she meets. We are all praying and hoping she can come home to us and continue to live her life to the fullest. We are truly grateful for everyones support and contribution in saving and giving her a chance of a healthy full life.

Here is a photo of Hazel and her sister/best friend, Kirby. They love to play and wrestle with each other, go on walks together and race at the park. We hope for Hazel and Kirby to reunite soon.

Here are some photos of Hazel in the veterinary ICU room, the day after her first surgery. We were able to have a Zoom call session with her and during the call, she was able to respond to our voices and lift her head to look around.

Thank you everyone for your time and support.
